With all the talk about what Keith Olbermanns move to Current TV means for Keith, the bigger question is what it means for Current. If youre to believe the networks chairman Al Gore, it means a lot. Gore gave an interview to The Wrap in which he claimed that, ever since yesterdays announcement, people have already begun looking for the channel.
After talking about Olbermanns passion and formidable intelligence, Gore was asked what impact Olbermann was making on the networks subscriber numbers.
From The Wrap:
Do you think hell create a groundswell of people asking their cable providers to make Current available to them?
Its already started. Spontaneously. Starting yesterday with the announcement, absolutely. You can look on Twitter and find it. Its not something that it began spontaneously.
Do you have any sense of the number of people who are reaching out to cable providers or cable providers that are reaching out to you?
This is a spontaneous thing thats just emerging on its own. Its a self-organized group and thats the best kind to have.
Of course, these comments should be taken with a grain of salt as they were given right before the upfronts with the network trying to sell to advertisers. Still, we wouldnt be surprised if theres truth there. Weve written a lot about how passionate Olbermanns fan base has gotten recently. While Twitters one thing, if Current comes out with specific subscription numbers showing a substantial uptick, it would be undeniable proof of his draw.
As we wait for his new show, well also anxiously await those figures.
Yeah, his mother watches now.
I guess if you are a "D" student, that covers well, just about everybody.
I guess they are up to 40 from their usual 35
“Formidable intelligence”? Compared to what? A pair of dirty socks?
Well, he had three viewers following his previous gig. Unfortunately, two were his director and his cameraman.
Another thread had a video of some bloggers (I guess) talking about this. It came up that CurrentTV’s viewership is around 22,000 on a given evening. This’ll probably increase that to 25,000...
Sorry Al, the conservatives who tune in to point and laugh don’t count. Look at the ratings in about a week.
Yeah...me. That way I can block it from my satellite TV guide.
Do you think hell create a groundswell of people asking their cable providers to make Current available to them?.....Do you have any sense of the number of people who are reaching out to cable providers or cable providers that are reaching out to you?
Yeah...both of them - Al and Tipper - want to know.
His predictions of growth are about as true as the "reality" of Glo-bull warming...
A below-average IQ Chimpanzee,
An Aardvark,
A slug,
Broccoli,
A box of small, decorative rocks,
A bag of Stanley hammers,
A bag of ten-penny nails,
A single ten-penny nail,
A potato,
Tapioca Pudding.
Al Gore is benefitting from the impossibility of having negative viewers.
Those two freaks are made for each other . I have standard tier and cannot even stumble onto current TV.
Olberman found one network where he’ll have even fewer viewers than at MSNBC
Gore - “Its a self-organized group and thats the best kind to have.
Except the Tea Party groups....of course.
I am constantly amazed that otherwise intelligent people give any credence whatever to what sub-90 IQ Al Gore has to say.
Unless it's the Tea Party. Then it's a bunch of Right Wing Racist Astroturfers financed by the GOP.
I heard on TV yesterday that on any given evening that chl usually has no more than 23,000 viewers at any one time. I wonder if that is true?
