“...another recent study—this one from Boston College’s Center for Retirement Research—found that while many state pension funds may be “substantially underfunded,” they account for just 3.8 percent of state and local spending and could be covered with an increase to just 5 percent.” Reviewing the studies is the only way to determine the veracity of this claim. Thanks for the interesting article.

Shouldn’t the title of the article be “Person shamelessly feeding at the public trough defends having others also shamelessly feeding at the public trough”?

You have a way with words. I suppose it could be rent-seeker defends rent-seeking but I like what you said much better.

Politicians have been underfunding the pensions for decades so they could line the pockets of their speical interest group supporters. Pensions have been sacrificed to the god of reelection.

Lessons so easily learned, and yet here we go again. Seems like it wasn’t so long ago that there were no public service unions. but I do remember when the ATC union decided it would be a good idea to strike.

One would think that the experience with unions in general and the pot-o-gold their pension funds have always been for the union leadership, would have been enough information to spell bad deal for the run of the mill public service employee.

But noooo, time for another lesson in greed corruption, mismanagement, misappropriation, misconduct, and misbehavior at the expense of...

Government employee unions are philosophically indefensible, unless your philosophy is Marxist nihilism.

And even then, they are as functionally unsustainable in the long run as a 100% fatal virus.

Today is a good day to die.
I didn't say for whom.

I don’t know the answer. A wise person once told me, “Believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see.” In my meanderings, I stumbled on an OPM item:http://www.fedscope.opm.gov/employment.asp
It enables you to view datacubes and, I think, do drilldowns re: interesting items. You might enjoy looking into it.

Politicians want re-election, period. When the poop hits the fan, they are long gone and hey, they are on the same gub’mint retirement plan.

The difference in the way Government behaves vs. Private Sector is it isn’t their money and they had nothing to do with its creation.

No skin in the game, government workers create nothing and are expense items.

No union, public or private never has, never can or never will create a single job. Not one.
