Mr. Camping has been embarrassing Christians for a long time now.

I guess it keeps us Christians on our toes. Also, it probably peels off some false believers, since it is wince inducing to be associated with this man.

The problem is, he also specified the May, 2011 date back in 1994. And events have played into his prediction to near perfection.

This movement, clearly the work of a demonic, Phelpsian self-promoter, is going to grow as this date approaches. And it will lead many people astray.

He believes he has determined the exact date of Noah's flood and that the end of the world commences exactly 7000 years from the day the fountains of the deep opened up. Seems a reasonably straightforward concept (although he is about 2500 years off from everyone else who has tried to configure a Bible timeline), but the convoluted means in which he works with numbers is both alarming and laughable. Here's an example - try to make some sense of this.

It is a shame.
I didn't start listening to Mr. Camping until after 1994 - so I wasn't all that tuned into what transpired during that fiasco. I just knew that when people would call him up with their questions and try to get him to speculate an 'End Time' date - he'd always refute them with the comment that it didn't matter.
150,000 people die every day. Many of these deaths are expected (old age, disease, etc), but many happen right out of the blue (accidents, tragedies). We should all be ready for the End Time today.
We should have this urgency for our loved ones, friends, and strangers. Today could be their's, or our's, last day. What does it matter if Jesus comes back on May 15, 2011, or December 21, 2012, or January 10, 2345 - if you die tomorrow? You're meeting Jesus then (or at least when you 'wake up').
I always thought that was a good way of looking at this question - and not to get sucked into knowing some unknowable date...

But alas, I am really sorry to hear that Mr. Camping went back to Date picking. He started 'preaching' some End of the Church Age doctrine in late 2001 - so I clicked his station off then. He's an intelligent man, and is sincere - but as near as I can tell he got caught up in his pride and felt a need to bring forth new 'doctrines' to satisfy itching ears. I can hope that he comes to his senses after May 2011, but given that he's around 90 years old -- he's probably not about to renounce his opinions...
