China deploys carrier-killer missile

Adm. Robert Willard, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, told the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun that China is deploying its new Dong Feng-21D anti-ship ballistic missile they publicly claim can sink U.S. aircraft carriers. The Admiral stated “this kind of capability should be a concern to the region, and it poses a challenge to any naval or air operations that would be conducted in that area were it to be employed.”

What is a Dong Feng-21D?

The Dong Feng-21D is a land-based guided missile that launches it war-head into space and returns it to earth at ten times the speed of sound while maneuvering to strike a moving target. Updates and tracking will be provided by satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles and radar all linked by a communications network, most likely, provided by military satellites.

Since the targets will be out of sight of ground base units it would have to be dependent on air and space borne

We have Free Trade™ China now, so war is never going to happen. They are our friends now. /sarc

Have you ever noticed how none of the Free Republic Free Trade crowd EVER chimes in on any of these Chinese military threat threads?

Even less likely is a Big Government Conservative chiming-in on one of my China strategic threat threads. Posting stuff from Heritage does that to them.

For that matter, I’ve never seen you on a human-trafficking thread. Remaining true to your heritage?

I was just dishing back some of your own medicine. Now you have the stupid. In any case, you might find the following thread of interest:

Magnequench: CFIUS and China's Thirst for U.S. Defense Technology.

Note the date and who posted it.

Todd, never mind our slave-loving friend, he's whining again.

You are just a long winded blow hard. Nobody seems to be able to debate you because you are incapable of making your position clear. I went to that link you provided, kind of ridiculous to post that book and then not comment or summarize at all, and then belittle because nobody wanted to play. You’re idiot.

You child. You asked why “none of the Free Republic Free Trade crowd EVER chimes in on any of these Chinese military threat threads?” I gave you one of my favorite examples, and now you complain that you lack the attention span to read it? Is it past your bedtime? You sound tired and cranky.

Poor, poor, little boy. Wrong again. Don’t fret, as you grow older you’ll grow accustomed to it.

At one time we did and maybe still have a few.

But on November 4, 2008, the American voters said, via their votes, that we should not be concerned about the United States being a World power and elected one barack obama to make it happen. In fact, they [the voters] said again, via teir votes, we should not be concerned with anything but hope and change.

Then in 2010 the United States Senate said don’t worry about our icbms and nuclear arsenal, the SALT Treaty they voted to ratify would take care of them.

You are right. He’d convene a blue ribbon panel to discover how we brought it upon ourselves.

T29:
"Although the 21d is being publicized as conventionally armed, I believe that it is nuclear capable and a nuclear warhead could certainly sink the carrier along with the rest of the group."

A nuclear warhead on a D21d aimed at a carrier would be utterly pointless. If you want to deliver a nuclear warhead against a carrier task group, a supersonic antiship cruise missile would be a far, far cheaper and more reliable method to do so. The Chinese have the P-270 Moskit (NATO: SS-N-21 Sunburn), which would be well suited for such a task. To waste an extremely valuable and scarce resource like a ballistic missile on something that could be better done by a relatively inexpensive antiship missile would be silly. And there is also the small point that the Chinese know full well that if they nuked an American carrier we would incinerate their entire nation.

No, the idea is that the conventional warhead D21d is supposed to be more difficult to defend against than anti-shp cruise missiles. It is, but whether it is good enough to get past our Aegis system remains to be seen. I very much doubt it. The D21d reentry vehicle must slow after reentry to allow enough maneuver time to course correct and have a chance of actually hitting its target. If it has a passive infrared targeting sensor, it would also have to shed its heat shield nosecone to expose the optical sensor. If it is RADAR guided, it will essentially be emitting a targeting beacon for our anti-ballistic missiles to home in on. The RV will be coming down at supersonic, but not hypersonic speeds, so it should not be any more difficult a target than a regular tactical ballistic missile, and we already know that Aegis works quite well on those.

The Chinese say they are deploying them and have them. We have seen a lot of chatter. But one thing we have not seen.

This DF-21D weapon has never had one single operational test...not one.

It is a lot of talk...and IMHO, it is a red herring in hopes we will "think" they have it and thereby limit our operations out of fear of it. Pure Sun Tsu.

As it is, the us has developed, tested, and fielded a successful anti-ballistic missile defense on our AEGIS vessels already. So even if they do ultimately make one of these...or several...it will be charging into the teeth of our most effective defense.

And that defense is getting better. In April of this year (2011) we successfully tested an anti-missile laser weapon system. Not deplyed yet...but the new Ford Class carriers, the new Zumwalt Destroyers, and the new Burke Flight III destroyers (should we develop them) will all ultimately have these weapons on them as well.

Here's how that would work (in addition to the AEGIS BMD missiles already deployed:
