The newest battleground for the fast-food giants is breakfast. McDonald's, Burger King, and Starbucks have turned up the griddle on joints like Dunkin Donuts, forcing them to fight back. Said Dunkin Donuts to the breakfast bullies, "Suck on our Sausage Pancake Bites!"

Last week, for a limited time only, Dunkin Donuts launched its Sausage Pancake Bites as a market test item. Billed as "a poppable breakfast snack that makes it easy for anyone to savor the delicious pairing of pancakes and sausages any time of day,"

Sausage Pancake Bites are bite-sized sausage links wrapped in a maple flavored pancake, sold as three for $1.59 or six for $3, and are about the size of small eggs. Let's pop one in for a breakfast test drive, shall we? One of the best things about Sausage Pancake Bites: no utensils. It's pancakes and sausage caveman-style, baby! And they're crazy-good.

The pancake is sweet and moist, and the maple flavoring doesn't overpower. The signature? The sausage. Not the rubbery refuse hawked at most joints, this sausage has spices and herbs and doesn't soak the pancake with grease.

It’s a donut company for goodness sake. I would expect most of their items to be fried. Sounds to me like one more innovation on the pigs in a blanket I first encountered in the 60s.

I stopped in my local Dunkin’ Donuts a few hours ago. I was mightily tempted to try one of the Pancake Sausage Bites. I’m sure I will at some point.

There is a grocery product that is a sausage on a stick, surrounded by pancake, like a corndog.
