The cause of America, wrote my countryman Tom Paine, is in great measure the cause of all mankind. That statement now has a practical, financial truth which Paine couldnt have imagined in 1776. The US is the worlds leading economy, the dollar its reserve currency. American prosperity is especially critical to Britain, the single largest overseas investor in the US.
That, above all, is why Britons should take satisfaction from the return of candidates committed to restoring order and sanity to the federal budget. Virtually the first thing John Boehner, the new Speaker of the House, said in his acceptance speech was that Congress would cut government spending. Not before time. Under Barack Obama, US debt has risen from 40 per cent of GDP to 62 per cent and, according to the Congressional Budget Office, it was on course to rise to 87 per cent by 2020, 109 per cent by 2025, and 185 per cent by 2035.
Yesterday, American voters reminded their politicians that they are servants, not rulers: that elected representatives are there to carry out the will of a people who, as the experience of many ages shows, are generally wiser than their leaders. Americans understand that governments, like individuals, must live within their means.
The Founders knew what they were doing when they put Congress in Article One of the Constitution, before the Presidency. The House of Representatives is supposed to control spending: its failure to discharge that duty properly is what brought America to its present predicament. Two years ago, this blog predicted that voters would punish those Congressmen who backed the bail-out; and so they have.
The US is at last returning to the sublime principles on which it was founded: principles, as I never tire of pointing out, inherited from this country. I

We should never put our trust in man, a government, or movement, our trust should always be in the Divine Providence of GOD.
Many are marveled that 13 little colonies declared Independence and cut off from the crown and reliance on Endland.
Those founding fathers put all their faith and trust in the divine providence of GOD.
They came together and swore their sacred honor, their lives, and their possessions.
Many say that today America is finished and we don't stand a chance on a wing on a prayer, but, that's just it ? that's just what we need, prayer, and our trust and reliance in divine providence.
If 54 men and 13 little colonies could defeat the world's only superpower back in the 1700s, then, GOD can turn this country around.

A account of George Washington praying at Valley Forge that was recored by a Reverend Nathaniel Randolph Snowden (1770-1851) from a Issac Potts.
He was an ordained Presbyterian minister and a graduate of Princeton University.
Issac Potts a quaker :
"I was riding with him (Mr. Potts) in Montgomery County, Penn'a near to the Valley Forge, where the army lay during the war of ye Revolution.
Mr. Potts was a Senator in our State & a Whig. I told him I was agreeably surprised to find him a friend to his country as the Quakers were mostly Tories.
He said, "It was so and I was a rank Tory once, for I never believed that America c'd ( could ) proceed against Great Britain whose fleets and armies covered the land and ocean, but something very extraordinary converted me to the Good Faith!"
"What was that," I inquired?
"Do you see that woods, & that plain?"
It was about a quarter of a mile off from the place we were riding, as it happened.
"There," said he, "laid the army of Washington.
It was a most distressing time of ye war, and all were for giving up the Ship but that great and good man.
In that woods pointing to a close in view, I heard a plaintive sound as, of a man at prayer.
I tied my horse to a sapling & went quietly into the woods & to my astonishment I saw the great George Washington on his knees alone, with his sword on one side and his cocked hat on the other.
He was at Prayer to the God of the Armies, beseeching to interpose with his Divine aid, as it was ye Crisis, & the cause of the country, of humanity & of the world.
Such a prayer I never heard from the lips of man.
I left him alone praying.
I went home & told my wife, I saw a sight and heard today what I never saw or heard before, and just related to her what I had seen & heard & observed.
We never thought a man c'd ( could ) be a soldier & a Christian, but if there is one in the world, it is Washington.
She also was astonished.
( " We thought it was the cause of God, & America could prevail." ) ......
Isaac Potts was not the only man who saw Washington praying at Valley Forge.
Another account of Washington praying was recorded in "The Aldine Press" based on the reporter's interviews with those who had fought in the war.
In the Aldine article, Washington was seen kneeling in silent prayer in a barn where his white horse was kept.
Sadly the American public, let those who would deny the United States it's Christian heritage, convince them that, instead of there being two separate accounts of Washington's many occasions of prayer, these two accounts being different constituted evidence that both accounts were contradictory and therefore legendary.
