I get a feeling there is going to be quite a few unemployed newscasters in the very near future. They are under orders to distort and sway voter confidence, many will do it but I feel the majority will balk and will be fired.

I think the majority will/does rationalize lying. They fancy themselves part of the power-elite, able to manipulate a significant fraction of public opinion and action. Few will balk. Some will feel a twinge of guilt, then rationalize the absence of honesty by balancing the lie against their own personal fortune. Better the people be lied to than the reporter loses her job.
