Shovels are so Dark Age anyway

President Obama shocked America with his admission in NY Times that he realized too late: “there’s no such thing as shovel-ready projects”. It has the effect of the John McCain’s ‘I never said I am a maverick’ remark.

There is no such thing as ‘shovel ready projects’, because the US bureaucracy is so over bloated and obese – it is dysfunctional.

Plus America is already out of the Dark Ages and industrial scale construction work is done with much more sophisticated tools. Nobody really wants to go back to windmills and shovels. It is the age of ‘tweeters’, so to speak.

The only one left digging with shovels is the Obama administration and the grandma planting petunias in her yard.

So let’s drop the shovel, hammer and sickle slogans and try to find out: where did the $800 billion of the Stimulus money go?

After year and a half of shovels here, shovels there, shovels everywhere, President Obama admitted – those are just words. No such thing in the real life.

Below is the collection of shovel catchy phrases that were thrown at us from the White House in press releases, speeches and remarks.

March 3, 2009

I can say that 14 days after I signed our Recovery Act into law, we are seeing shovels hit the ground.

August 15, 2009

November 12, 2009

DOT agencies have been doing their part to make Recovery Act funds available to states as quickly as possible for local shovel-ready transportation projects.

December 03, 2009

We got some good, hardheaded feedback… about how we have to do this more effectively… how can we make sure that shovel ready actually means shovel ready…

December 15, 2009

… obligations that cause a shovel-ready project to hire a contractor, and for that contractor to hire workers to implement that project, puts people to work.

December 16, 2009

February 06, 2010

May 18, 2010

Recovery Act funds were allocated to make the park a “shovel ready” site for an industrial use.

July 15, 2010

Because we did, shovels will soon be moving earth and trucks will soon be pouring concrete where we are standing.

July 20, 2010

Obama stood on a platform in the middle of the work site, which at the moment remains a big area of mud and dirt, with shovels ready to go.

August 09, 2010

They will fulminate and say it’s going to be Armageddon if we pass all this stuff, but then they’re cheesin’ and grinnin’ right there — (laughter) — got the shovel all ready — (laughter)

Nobody is laughing anymore.

forget liposuction and a scalpel. This country’s goverment needs a industrial vaccum cleaner and a hatchet to get rid of the fat.

Actually, I've seen those "Recovery Act" road signs all over here in the Northeast. Every state has gotten into that pile of money for work they wanted to do anyway, but were waiting for Federal money to get started. I don't know what ELSE that money was funding, but the roads sure have been getting paved, and bridges and exits being built around here.

Of course, that work would have been done at some time in the future, using funds from the Fed. DOT, but this was 'found' money, and pushed some plans from the back to the front burner.

It is true - for the states it was ‘found money’ - for the Feds it was ‘printed’ and ‘borrowed’.
