Maine senators key to Don’t Ask vote
Pro-repeal activists say they don’t have enough votes yet.
All eyes are on Maine as gay-rights groups try to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
The state’s senators could cast the deciding votes for cloture on the issue. Activists say they don’t yet have enough votes to overcome a filibuster of the defense-bill amendment, which would remove a 17-year-old law that bans openly gay Americans from serving in the military.
“The votes to break McCain’s filibuster are not there,” said Aubrey Sarvis of Servicememebers Legal Defense Network, which sent Lady Gaga to Maine Monday to organize a rally and pressure the state’s senators.
Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe are Republicans, but the activists believe that both Maine lawmakers could succumb to pressure and back the repeal. Collins and Snowe worked with Democrats on health care and environmental issues earlier this year.
Catholics for Equality, a pro-repeal religious group, could play a key role in the lobbying effort.
The group met with religious lawmakers on Friday to convince them that the repeal would not violate their faith. Collins is Catholic, and Snowe is Greek Orthodox.
“Speaking out as pro-equality Catholics is so important to the legislative process,” activist Patsy Trujillo said.
In case the Maine duo votes against repeal, Human Rights Campaign has also been pressuring Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), George Voinovich (R-Ohio), and Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) to back cloture.
Meanwhile, conservative groups led by the Center for Military Readiness have been calling lawmakers to ensure that their side has the 41 votes needed to make the filibuster work.
The debate is expected to begin on the Senate floor Tuesday.

“We are directing our activists against amnesty to contact every US Senate campaign in America today to determine which candidates oppose or support Obama and Reid’s Dream Act Amnesty amendment,” said William Gheen. “We intend to track which Senate candidates support or oppose this Amnesty attempt and remind them all that voters will defeat any candidate unwise enough to support this Amnesty ambush!”

Maybe Hatch considered what happened to his Utah Senate colleague Bob Bennett, and the former Utah Congressman Chris Cannon, who was a big supporter of amnesty.
