If he was so desperate to see Republicans stay in power why did he embrace the illegal alien situation the detriment of the Republicans in 2006?

Because he thinks conservatives need the latino vote to win presidencies and wants to take them back from the Democrats since most of them, being Catholic, are socially conservative and belong in our party. Why should Democrats own the Blacks, latinos and young, single women? And why shouldn't we try to win them?

He actually thinks they can be convinced the GOP's value system is a better fit and he doesn't want to drive them away permanently.
