In Illinois, the Republican Senate nominee, Rep. Mark Kirk, is making a two-step connection between Saddam Hussein and Democratic candidate Alexi Giannoulias.
Kirk accuses Broadway Bank (the shuttered institution run by Giannoulias' family) of giving a loan to an Iraqi businessman connected to Saddam Hussein, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Kirk said that in 2006, Broadway Bank loaned $22.75 million to Nadhmi Auchi and Tony Rezko, the Chicago real estate developer convicted of fraud and money laundering in 2008.
Giannoulias' campaign responded that he left the bank a few months before the loan was approved.
"Come on, again, that's political smokescreens, trying to link me to Saddam Hussein. It's a Washington, DC guilt by association game," Giannoulias told Fox Chicago in an interview that the Kirk campaign, in an e-mail to reporters, labeled a "dodge."
The mudslinging comes in the midst of an air war. Kirk and Giannoulias are both up on TV in Illinois. The Chamber of Commerce is also airing an ad on Kirk's behalf.

Isn’t Auchi the guy who fronted the cash for Obama’s house? Just asking. I remember reading that somewhere before the election... How many degrees of separation between the ball-less precious one and the former spider-hole resident? Oh! How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie-pop?
