The Magnitude of Missouri's Rebuke
The Catholic Key ^ | 8/4/2010 | Jack Smith

Posted on 08/04/2010 9:25:02 AM PDT by markomalley

On the front page of Drudge this morning, the lead item blares in all-cap red "BLOW TO O: MO SAYS NO". But here in Missouri, you'd be hard pressed to find the tiny bullet point "Missouri sets up challenge to federal health care law" on the Kansas City Star's homepage. It gets less billing than their promo for the "Hottest people, places and trends" feature in Ink magazine. So is Missouri's rebuke to Obamacare a big deal or not?

Let's look at the numbers. Proposition C, which rejects the Constitutionally questionable federal health care insurance mandate, garnered 71.1 percent of the vote last night.

- The 667,680 people who voted for Prop. C outnumbered the combined number of people who voted for the winners of both the Democratic and Republican Senate primary races.

- The number of people who voted in the Prop. C contest outnumbered the total number of people voting for all Senate primary candidates.

- The number of people voting for Prop. C outnumbered the total number of people voting for all Republican candidates for Senate, meaning that despite a lopsided Republican turnout, support for Prop. C was thoroughly bi-partisan.

- Even assuming the unlikely occurrence that 100 percent of the Republican turnout voted in favor of Prop. C, that means that at the very minimum, 25 percent of Democrats also supported the measure.

All this despite the fact that:

- Only $115,000 was spent by proponents of Prop. C, while the Missouri Hospital Association spent $300,000 to defeat it, according to the Missouri Record whose editor managed the Yes on C campaign.

- There was a near news blackout on the very existence of the initiative.

- Annectdotally speaking, I never saw a single Yes or No on Prop. C sign and didn't receive a single communication from either campaign, despite being a 100 percent turnout household.

- The only other major statewide race was the Senate primary to select candidates to replace Kit Bond and the result was a foregone conclusion for both parties. Robin Carnahan took 84 percent of the Democrat vote and Roy Blunt took 71 percent of the Republican vote.

- Even the Catholic bishops of Missouri who'd taken strong stands against aspects of Obamacare, took a neutral position on Prop. C - preferring to spend their energies on attempts to exclude abortion from the scheme.

So, with little publicity and virtually no prodding, 7 out of 10 Missourians who voted yesterday sent an unmistakable rebuke to Obamacare. You can call that symbolic. You can say the federal courts will overturn it anyhow. And you might be right on both counts. But politicians who dismiss it are gonna have a heck of a time in November.

“So is Missouri's rebuke to Obamacare a big deal or not?”

A rebuke yes, an effective tool to undo the law, not. Thus it is not a big deal.

The political reality is that the Health Care Reform Act will not be repealed, nor does either political party want the law repealed. Too much money and power at stake that benefits the Congressional elites and special interest groups.

But politicians who dismiss it are gonna have a heck of a time in November.

They are going to have a heck of a time even if they don't dismiss it. At this point the democrats see an enormous 60 foot wave heading their way that has risen to the point that they will not be able go over it, or around it, or even under it. They are going going to be wiped out and the only question now is, will they be held underwater until they drown, or will they make it back to the surface....only to see another wave coming.

It will be a big deal if Missourians turn out the RAT politicians behind this obamination. If they don’t it is meaningless.

It is a big deal, the rebellion has begun. More states are going to do this. Obamacare will then be defunded next year after the pubbies take both houses, then repealed when a republican takes the presidency in 2012.

Or, it will be found unconstitutional. Either way works for me.

Obamacare is not long for this world. It is simply too destructive in so many ways, even if not repealed or found unconstitutional, it will implode under its own burdensome weight.

The State Controlled Activist Media could care less about this. It isn't even mentioned on the St. Louis NBC affiliate KSDK website today. IT IS NON-NEWS to them because it is a rebuke to their masters - the Democrat party headed by their Dear Reader Barack. Another sad day for journalism.

That is what I like a positive attitude, we have enough doom and gloom on here.
At times, I think Obamacare is the worst damage and then i think it is all of these stimulus and bailouts and takeovers, all together it is absolutely horrible

If they are the only state in their area with citizens allowed to choose healthcare, the medical tourism industry could help their state’s economy. Like Mayo in Michigan full of Canadians.

Even better, of Missouri’s 114 counties, all but 2 voted YES. In one northern county, 89.2% voted YES.

I have never seen such a strong expression of voter sentiment.

Here is the official county-by-county result:

I like your way of thinking, because it's essentially my approach to our nation's problems as well. I'm constantly assuring others not to worry, as the underlying dynamics of any/all government sponsored spending programs simply does not compute.

Socialism, as a matter of the natural laws of physics, is unsustainable. Therefore, regardless of any actual actions taken (de-funding, repeal, bankruptcy), the end result is always the same.

Ergo, don't worry, be happy. If there is one caveat, however, it's that messy process of restoring balance. You know, civil war & all; but still, if you manage to survive, you get to enjoy a restored republic.

A little bit of worry is good, it keeps one motivated. Too much worry is incapacitating. The bottom line is, our own revolution was a huge longshot and many many people, who wanted it, still thought it too farfetched to be active in it, at least not until it was well under way by the courgeous few who got it all started.

One thing is for sure, a defeatist attitude never won anything....well...except defeat. We simply cannot sit down and accept socialism as inevitable, no matter how bad the odds.

The folks who proposed and the folks who pushed this outrageous law on us have no principles. They are power-oriented and the instant it looks like their proposal is the fast path to no power, they will change their tune in an New York Second. But we must not be fooled. We must have long memories because the instant we allow any of these dangerous fools back into office they will do the same exact thing to us.

“The political reality...”

We the People will be changing that political reality....and if DC won’t listen, St. Louis may well wind up the new Capitol City of the Newly United States of Flyover Country.

I pray you folks are correct and that all of the last eighteen months of Obama damage will be undone. Three choices exist: armed revolt, rule by bureaucratic elites, or corporate elites. Given that most Americans are unable to survive by their own hands, the latter two choices seem inevitable.
