Stiffen leather holster

I got this response from a player in Australia -

I read an interesting article on freerepublic.com about a guy that bought a shoulder holster but the leather was too soft for a quick draw. He asked for help on how to stiffen up the leather. He got all sorts of advice - heat, soak it in brine, etc -but the best was "viagra".

LMAO but the best to stiffen up leather would be methylated spirits, i used to use clear methylated spirits on my work hat in Australia, salt water stiffens it but makes the leather or rabbit pelt brittle and crack

I don't remember who asked about stiffening a leather shoulder holster but I hope this helps.

I’m no chemist, so does “methylated spirits” get sold under a brand name?

I’ve found the best way to stiffen a holster is to buy one that meets a person’s criteria.

Aussie Holster Ping!

What pray tell is methylated spirits?

Does that mean wood alcohol, or rubbing alcohol?

Water, a mold, wooden tools, and elbow grease.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denatured_alcohol

Denatured alcohol is ethanol that has additives to make it poisonous or unpalatable, and thus, undrinkable. In some cases it is also dyed.

The Aussie author said to use only the clear as the purple will discolor and damage the leather

Seems like a mean thing to do, but too many painters were falling off the ladders.

I posted the question earlier. You’re not going to believe what worked for me. Or, should I tell without charging? lol Seriously...I put a healthy dose of Plastic Weld epoxy inside the holster, rubbed it in with my finger and wiped off the excess, and let it dry.

Couldn’t hardly get if off of my finger, but it created a slick surface (which I presume will hold) and the gun now clears the holster without a problem. Worked for me.

Ingenious solution. That might help some others with the same problem.

Send me the address and I’ll send him one I don’t use. Plenty stiff, fast draw, held a 1911 or a four inch barrel revolver for years. Still in very good condition.
