There is no really big thing coming along in technology that will save the day...

I've always felt that technology, and particularly communications technology, sets the stage rather than answering the call. For example, radio set the stage for the fascist movement. Note that in Clockwork Orange ( the book ) the populace is enthralled by "the big broadcast", and this is a projection by the author of radio based culture.

Now we've moved through TV to the internet, which has had a huge impact in cost reduction through labor savings, and this is the root of the current economic upheavel ... IMHO!

H.G. Wells, in The World Set Free, predicted that cheap nuclear power would have this kind of impact but prediction is hard, especially about the future.
