NEW DELHI: A Pakistan-bound cargo vessel carrying a "huge quantity" of explosives and other weapons has been detained by the authorities at a harbour in eastern India, police said on Saturday.
The vessel was heading for the Pakistani port city of Karachi and was detained Friday on an intelligence tip-off at Diamond Harbour, 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of Kolkata, capital of the West Bengal state, police said.
"The Indian Coast Guard and navy personnel have found a huge quantity of explosives, rocket launchers, anti-aircraft guns and some bombs in two large containers," West Bengal police director general Bhupinder Singh said.
"The captain of the ship is being interrogated for further information," he added at a news conference in Kolkata.
Police identified the vessel as the MV Agean Glory.
The St Vincent-registered ship had set sail from the port of Chittagong in neighbouring Bangladesh, West Bengal police inspector general Surojit Karpurokayastha told AFP.
The 153-metre-long ship will be taken to Kolkata and searched thoroughly by intelligence and other officials, Singh said.
Nuclear rivals India and Pakistan have fought three wars, including two over the Himalayan region of Kashmir.
Ping!
Weapons for the Taliban?
*ping*
We live in a dangerous world made even more dangerous by a regime who hates this country and will do anything and everything to weaken and destroy it.
Were you sending arms to the moosies, would you send them to a port in India?
nooooo, silly, for the Pakistani government who back both Al and Tal.
It was coming from a port in Bangladesh - another Muslim country.
Bangladesh has access through Burma to China, for cheap weaponry, including those from North Korea.
The ship was intercepted by the Indian Coast Guard, as Bangladesh happens to be close to the eastern Indian coastline.
Hope they seize the cargo and give it to the good guys in Baluchistan.

“Customs officials quiz crew of arms-laden ship”
KOLKATA:
SNIPPET: “The vessel, Aegean Glory, was en route to the Kolkata port from Chittagong in Bangladesh for offloading some cargo when it was intercepted. The police and the Coast Guard had information from the Kolkata Port Trust that the ship was carrying undeclared Grade-I military arms and explosives.
Though the agent of the Crystal Shipping Company had declared that the ship was carrying a consignment of arms and ammunition for the Nepalese Army for offloading at the Kolkata port, no disclosure was made about the ship’s cargo of approximately five tonnes of dangerous weapons and explosives destined for Karachi, DGP Bhupinder Singh said.
He said the captain claimed that the consignment, comprising anti-aircraft guns, rocket-launchers and smoke bombs, was meant to be delivered to Major K. Khan of the Pakistani Army at the Karachi port. But he could not produce matching documents.”
These weapons will be used by the Packkies against the US troops in theMiddle East. It will be the final betrayal and it will reunite the Ummah. Then we will finally be free of our entanglements. This has been Hussein’s treasonous agenda from the start. He is an evil dictator!

“Detained ship sets sail”
SNIPPET: “Aegean Glory was allowed to leave the city following clearance from the ministry of external affairs on behalf of the UN.
Customs officials had found discrepancies in the declarations of the ships clearing agent in Calcutta, Crystal Shipping, and its captain regarding the consignment on board.
Aegean Glory was to go to Karachi after offloading military hardware meant for Nepal in the city.
The ministry informed the Customs on Wednesday that the ship was carrying UN goods after getting in touch with the world bodys movement control office in New York. Customs officials were awaiting the confirmation from the UN since the ship was detained on June 25.
We cleared the ships movement after Customs officials told us they had confirmed that the ship was indeed carrying military hardware from the UN mission in Liberia, said a port official.
Sources said the ship off- loaded the hardware meant for the Nepal army before leaving for Karachi.”
