He awoke Sunday quite depressed
Reminded of what lie ahead
Not looking forward to going anywhere
He had rather sleep late instead
Sunday was always his favorite day
After working hard all week
Sleep late then watch the ball game
Get some real R & R and peace
Oh, he wanted to visit, but then again
Ball games would be on all day
What a bummer to miss any or all
Why, his favorite team would play
Guilt overrides, he knows he must go
His mind starts devising a plan
Make an appearance an hour or so
Then leave as soon as he can
He arrives at 1 pm on the nose
There's a frail man waiting outside
The old man smiles as he sees him
With so much Fatherly pride
Sorry I'm late Dad, so much to do
I can't stay as long as I planned
As Dad hugs him tight for a long time
He sees hurt in the eyes of the man
Time flew by as they reminisced
Of all the good times they had
All of a sudden it's time to go
And he says his goodbye to Dad
At a nursing home just a mile from town
An aging Father wipes away a tear
And softly whispers, "I love you Son",
"I'll see you again next year"
There is a thread on Fark.com, entitled ‘ “Dear Daddy” ... what would you say to your Dad today?’
While there a some that think highly of their fathers, it is overwhelmed by those filled with bile and bitterness to their fathers. It is a painful read.
