Abby....as a sailor myself, I can say your one tough kid. Don’t let the naysayers grind you down.

In a video interview posted on her web site, Abby's father, Lawrence said, "We are 'Born-Again' Christians, and we don't make any decision just based on feeling or even on sound knowledge. We also pray about it. The conviction of prayer and the answer to prayer has led to where we are with Abigail's campaign and definitely has help in the whole process and scope of making decisions." Am I the only one who has a problem with this?

I teens were 1/10th as trained and prepared to drive a car before getting a license, as Abigail is as a sailor, we'd have ten of thousands fewer killed and maimed on our highways

They have pointed out that Abby is a highly experienced and highly skilled sailor. Lies I tell ya! This little girl should be strapped into a child seat in the back seat of mamas car....Bad mama!
For that matter, Kids up to 17 years old should be forced to ride in child protective seats designed for teenagers.
Abby's father, Laurence Sunderland said, In this day and age we get overprotective with our children. Look at how many teenagers die in cars every year. Should we let teenagers drive cars?
Child abuser!
Child protective services should have this bozo arrested!

If more teens had the ‘nads this girl has and more parents encouraged them to follow their dreams like these did, I suspect we’d have a much brighter future.

As the parent of a young daughter I would have NEVER permitted this. I would have in fact called the police and issued a restraining order to stop her.
I was practically raised on a yacht myself as my father was a yacht salesman. My parents also owned a boat for many years and I am no stranger to boats.
Allowing a sixteen year old to sail around the world in a yacht ALL BY HERSELF is SIMPLY PREPOSTEROUS AND BEYOND INSANITY.
The area where she was found is infested with pirates. There are frequently dangerous storms around the horn of Africa which have taken down much bigger ships in these shark infested waters.
What were her parents thinking allowing such complete and total madness?

I am totally behind Abby and the parents on this one. She had the training and the experience and the equipment to do this. The fact that the mast was destroyed yet Abby came through it just fine tells us that this was no foolhardy publicity-seeking stunt. It was a well-trained athlete attempting to do something she loved and wanted to do using equipment which would keep her safe in the event of a possible accident. The accident occurred and she came through it just fine.
Go Abby! Don't let the life-suckers keep you from safely pursuing your goals!!!!

Why did she set off knowing she would be in the Indian Ocean during rough weather, instead of waiting out the season?
Her parents sent her off before she got too old to break a record :)
It was a foolish stunt...not an adventure.
I don’t buy the “Well teenagers just sit on the couch” argument either. She could do alot of sailing, enter races, go on day trips on the coast, instead of playing video games on the couch.
At very least, her parents should have had an insurance policy against rescue costs...if nobody would sell them a policy, well that says alot right there.

I agree with one of the posters at the webpage. The author seems to have something against Christains. I disagree with their decision to encourage Abby to do this but I admire them for their faith in God. Maybe once again we are being mislead by the media.

What does her ‘born again’ status have to do with any of this?
