Who Cares About Abortion, There's a Deficit!
Creative Minority Report ^ | 6-9-2010 | Matt Archbold

Who cares about taxpayer money going to kill babies every three or four seconds, THERE'S A BUDGET DEFICIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That seems to what Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels (R) thinks the next President's thoughts should be on social issues. This is especially concerning coming from Mitch Daniels as many believe Mitch Daniels could be the next president.

I hope not.

The Weekly Standard blog has some disturbing takeaways from an interview with Daniels:

Mitch Daniels told THE WEEKLY STANDARD's Andy Ferguson that the next president "would have to call a truce on the so-called social issues. We’re going to just have to agree to get along for a little while,” until economic issues are resolved. This morning, at the Heritage Foundation, I asked Daniels if that meant the next president shouldn't push issues like stopping taxpayer funding of abortion in Obamacare or reinstating the Mexico City Policy banning federal funds to overseas groups that perform abortions. Daniels replied that we face a "genuine national emergency" regarding the budget and that "maybe these things could be set aside for a while. But this doesn't mean anybody abandons their position at all. Everybody just stands down for a little while, while we try to save the republic."

To clarify whether Daniels simply wants to de-emphasize these issues or actually not act on them, I asked if, as presdient, he would issue an executive order to reinstate Reagan's "Mexico City Policy" his first week in office. (Obama revoked the policy during his first week in office.) Daniels replied, "I don't know." This doesn't sound like the kind of guy who can save a republic. Sounds to me like he thinks the fiscal issues poll a lot higher than the social ones so he thinks telling social conservatives to shut up...

We won’t really solve the budget defecit until we solve the moral defecit in this country.

I agree with Daniels. We will not have the luxury of arguing over social issues if we lose the country entirely to the Marxists. Mere survival will be the norm.

Get a clue Matt:

Indiana Governor Signs Bill Requiring Doctors To Offer Ultrasound to Women Seeking Abortion [Apr 21, 2005] Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels (R) on Tuesday signed into law a bill (SB 76) that will require state abortion providers to tell any woman seeking abortion that she has the option of viewing an ultrasound of her fetus and hearing her fetus's heartbeat before undergoing the procedure,

It sounds like he should have a cabinet post (Treasury?) rather than a governorship or the presidency. The era of the green eye-shade Republican is over.

I guess you missed when he was the Director of the Office of Management and Budget under George W. Bush.

His nickname was "Mitch The Knife".

Also tell us about his stand on parental notification , Matt.

Maybe you can also tell us about the legislation he signed that included it.

Haven’t paid much attention to this guy, but lately I hear a lot of stuff from him that I like, which of course means he has no chance of winning.

This man has jumped the shark. It was only yesterday he was bashing Republicans for bashing Obamacare.

Bush called Mitch Daniels “the blade” when he ran OMB in his administration.

Daniels is 100% correct. EVERYTHING else is on the back burner behind fiscal issues for the next President.

You might want to read Governor Daniels' March 25 editorial in the Wall Street Journal before you accuse him of favoring Obamacare.

Great. Maybe he can run for the Libertarian ticket.

Only a few posts on this thread and I'm already dismayed at the amen chorus. The day so-called “social issues” get relegated to insignificancy, we're nothing more than money changers.

They try this every damn election. I gotta give them credit for coming up with something new for a change (”The deficit is too important for us to focus on Social Issues, those all need to take a back seat because of this national emergency!”); usually they try to make us dump “Social Issues” in the name of National Security.

Credit for trying a new angle, but it's still the same MO. “There are far too many important things to focus on to bother with your dumb Social issues.” Every damn election, every damn time, same crap.

I said nothing about Obamacare. I asked if he had raised taxes early in his term. It was a question, not a statement.

What, so according to you, fiscal conservatives are like the money changers Jesus threw out of the temple? The fact is, budget issues are more important. I hate abortion and Roe v Wade, but even if it’s overturned, people will still have abortions. If we don’t solve this fiscal crisis soon, our nation as we know it will be done.

Not biblical money changers, money changers in general. If all we've become is a souless party of better budgeters, then we've forfeited any moral high-ground.

Nobody would ever suggest we just let the Liberals have gun control in exchange for a balanced budget, nor would they suggest we stay neutral on Israel in exchange for tax cuts. So why are we supposed to surrender “Social Issues” every election in the name of the “far more important” crisis du jour?

Three legs of Conservatism: Social, Fiscal, and National Defense. All three legs are of equal importance, and none of the three legs is to be sacrificed on behalf of the other two. Just as we would never accept surrender in Iraq in exchange for a ban on Abortion, or tripling the National Debt in exchange for a Defense of Marriage Amendment, we should not accept “putting Social Issues aside” in the name of budget cuts.

Mitch Daniels has lectured us on the supposed impotence of Abortion bans and why we shouldn't bother, and told us that all Social Issues need to be set aside for “more important” things. He doesn't get it. No thanks.

A truce? A truce can only exist if both sides pull back. It is disheartening when a Republican leader lends credence to the bogus notion that there are two aggressors in the Culture War. The truth of course is that conservatives are always reacting to the latest outrage from the Left.

And what if there is a Sup Court vacancy for President Daniels? It sounds to me like he would have no stomach for a fight over this. It sounds like he’d happily nominate another Sandra Day O’Connor (or even a Souter) to avoid a fight.
