Mexican-American students at a school in Morgan Hill, California have feigned outrage because a group of students outfitted themselves in bandannas and t-shirts designed with the American flag on them on Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday. Unfortunately, these students have demonstrated they are more American than Mexican, even though they would like us to believe otherwise.
Cinco de Mayo is not even considered a national holiday in Mexico, it's a regional holiday mostly celebrated in the state of Puebla, which means there are Mexicans, who actually live in the country, who don't necessarily celebrate it.
Americans for some reason have adopted this particular holiday and some use it as an occasion to run to bars to eat nachos and drink Coronas, without even really knowing the significance of the holiday.
I have no problem with that, but choosing to celebrate the day is an elective choice.
We are not obligated to celebrate a day that has significance to another nation even if a faction of our society has ties to that nation. I've never heard of anyone becoming angry if they don't see someone wearing green on St. Patrick's Day, but now we have to be careful on May 5th?

There was a big Irish guy when I was at Avco Everett who used to chant a mantra about "Born in the shadow of the Bunker Hill Memorial, Son of Irish Immigrants, ..." When some poor guy showed up wearing orange on the Saint's Day, it wasn't pretty.
The practice of celebrating Cinco de Mayo in the schools is one that is not conducive to learning. They should simply ban all displays relating to Cinco de Mayo in the schools.
You’re brilliant!!!
The practice of celebrating cinco de mayo in the U.S. is insulting to me, period.
I disagree...if the feigned outragers can explain why cinco de Mayo is a significant date in history. What are the odds?
If you were a partier you would think differently. Spanish people, however, should be offended. The so called holiday celebrates beer. That is its only legitimacy. It is not in any sense a celebration of Spanish heritage. That is laughable.
It makes me laugh that schools have a problem with Coke and junk food, but see no problem with celebrating a fake holiday marketed to drink Corona and Jose Cuervo.
Nope. Even when I was a partier I despised this "holiday". I also never celebrated St. Patrick's day for similar reasons.
The mental capacity of those who are outraged by the display of US flags on Cinco de Mayo are the same who want to boycott Arizona Iced Tea!
I saw an interview of two of the boys on FoxNews this morning. Apparently these boys have not yet been able to return to school for fear of their safety. The police recommended against it. There was a march of 200 Latino students yesterday who were demanding respect. Apparently, the Latinos think that this incident shows lack of respect for them. The school authorities are not doing a very good job of maintaining a learning environment which is free of fear. There needs to be a shakeup.
“Cinco de Mayo, Ocho de Mayo”
Hold........... the MAYO
First , Remove the “vice” Principal , Rodrigues, Hernandez or some other “Latino “Name.
This Jerk should understand that Americans Bought , Built and Maintain this School at enormous cost.
Never , Never take down an American Flag, Millions of People paid the ULTIMATE price so that Gutierez or whatevever his name is can suck up his Salary and Benefits plus a nice Pension.
Get rid of the traitor.
Please check how many of these Latino students belong to Illegal people who Spawned them. If any , send them out of this country with Hernandez Immediately.
Mexican aint Spanish!
Nor have I seen any of our French-American citizens become offended when I wore an American flag on Bastille Day.
Cinco de Mayo has been adopted by La Raza and MEChA
(marxist/anarchist groups) as a May Day celebration.
Cinco de Mayo, Ocho de Mayo, forget all of it, just vote for Ocho de Cinco on the Dancing Show.
Mexicans, if they knew their own history, should be delighted to see the red, white and blue on the Cinco de Mayo.
If Uncle Sam didn’t demand that Napoleon III withdraw his troops there wouldn’t be a Cinco de Mayo.
One is either a Mexican or an American. One cannot be both.
