Mark Levin Hammers New EPA Regulation Set to Drive Up Cost of Renovating Pre-1978 Homes - Audio

Here is video of "The Great One" - Mark Levin - talking on his radio show about how a new EPA Regulation will impact things in practical ways in town like Joplin, Missouri, and all across America.

The new EPA regulation requires remodeling and renovation work done on homes built before 1978 to be done by a certified contractor trained to work in a lead-safe environment, and it could drive up the cost of renovating older homes dramatically.

A local Joplin contractor said it could double the cost of insulation work. Just another example of how increasing government regulation is going to impact our economy in a negative way.

EPA needs to be split up and devolved to the states.

They are out of control.

The government taxes transactions. They create necessity for transactions, and tax them.

My home was built in the sixties and I’ll be damned if I’ll be forced to renovate it. If push comes to shove, the only renovation that will occur is incineration.

Any indication how this rule applies to people doing the work themselves?

Unless the states go along, it is unenforceable.

Are you sure that you are capable of such things? After all it is going to take government regulation to get you to choose the correct light bulb. /s

Theoretically speaking, of course.

I live in one of those homes. Why, pray tell, was 1978 chosen as a cutoff?

This law has no affect on people doing the work themselves.

1978 is the last year lead based paint was sold.

What are you talking about? Who is forcing you to renovate your house?

Heard a news snippet that home sellers must prove that a home meets all newly enacted EPA requirements (ie.energy efficient windows etc.,).

That’s going to increase the asking price for existing homes and cause a demand bubble for new construction.

Who wants to bet that existing homes will be confiscated & renovated by some form of Section 8 largesse?!!!!! Or somehow Freddie & Fannie will subsidize unqualified home buyers at tax-payer expense.

Tis True. I just got two estimates to repaint my house exterior. Both contractors told me about this and that if my house was built before 1978 (it was) and I had any children under 5 years old, then they would have to cocoon the house before they painted it and that would triple their estimate. Fortunately I don’t have any children under 5 living in my 1962 model house, so I get the non-EPA regulation estimate.

Our state already has lead safety regs...I’m not sure what is new about this.

99% of the innner cities would fall victim to this regulation. Either it’s an income redistribution scheme or it’s DOA.

Does Ross Douthat have a problem with this? If so, Mark better shut up.

This hasn’t gotten too much attention. Levin didn’t even know about it until two callers filled him in. Related threads:

This post by Beagle8U confims exactly what the callers said:

A buddy of mine is a private contractor. He stopped over yesterday and was bitching about this new regulation.

It is going to cost him $800 to take the silly class to get certified to deal with lead paint. He said that following the regs will add thousands of $$ to even what was before small jobs.

It will almost double the cost of replacing windows in older homes.

I’m assuming that, at some point in time, force/coercion/intimidation might be applied. That will likely happen if, politically, we continue down the same path. We can, in large part, fix that this November. I am imagining a “worse case” scenario, you understand.
