One can only wonder what the Polish pilot was confused about when making his approach.
The Russians have some interesting construction techniques.
I’m not sure what I’m looking at here. Could it be that those gold colored devices mounted (very amateurishly, I might add) on whatever mounting available, were supposed to provide a visual assist to a landing aircraft? One would hope that there was a GCA type radar or some other electronic glideslope facility to assist in a zero-zero visibility condition.
It could be but I have to also ask about the status of the airfield being a so called mothballed airfield.
I find it interesting that there are newly constructed facilities on the base which could be ATC upgrades and that large transports were sitting on the tarmac.
These photos if authentic make me go Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
It has that Rustic look...
ISL circa 1912
Sure looks like the Russians had no intention of apologizzing at the next day’s ceremonies annd just took care of the nasty little details the night before....:-(
probably wasn’t the first time, nor will it be the last!
Ever hear of a thing called “electrical conduit?”
Here’s a Google look at the airport. Looks like a standard regional. http://www.maplandia.com/russia/airports/smolensk-airport/
