Nuclear ambiguity works. This is why I never tell my Home Owners Association what is in my garage. Ambiguity has kept Arab nations from starting conventional wars against Israel. It has prevented meaningful action against North Korea. It has prevented India and Pakistan from fighting an additional 30 or 40 wars since their independence 60 years ago. It may have also prevented World War III, a conventional blitzkrieg by the Soviet Union through the Fulda Gap, across Germany and to the English Channel.
After 9/11, many allies and adversaries were surprised by how pusillanimous the immediate American response was. A terrorist organization based in and protected by Afghanistan murdered 3,000 Americans in broad daylight. Surely this contingency would call for the use of the ultimate weapon. Then, it didn't. I am not arguing that it should have, but certainly now the threshold for housing terrorists who attack in the United States has been lowered as the host country knows we will not use our entire arsenal.
Obama has changed the policy of ambiguity to make America even less safe. The old policy had kept us relatively safe since the dawn of the Cold War. The new policy explicitly limits the circumstances under which America would use nuclear weapons. One can argue about when or if we should ever use them, but by explicitly publicizing where the line is drawn on using our nuclear weapons, President Obama has made the world much more dangerous for us and safer for our enemies to plan.

Impeach the traitor! He is not upholding his oath of office!!!
The surrender monkey in action.
Might as well replace the nuclear red phone on his desk with a direct line to the UN.
That's a great idea, but unfortunatly we have a Congress that plays on his team and always will until removed from office.
(Gazing down the nose): Oh, but we’re BETTER than the rest of the world, so we should be completely open and transparent about national defense strategy and tactics. Secrets aren’t FAIR, don’t you understand? Now EVERYbody will see how good we are and love us fowwever and ever! /sarc.
Argh.
Colonel, USAFR
Guess all those years in the madrassa paid off. America put an anti-American in the White House and we are going to pay for it. Our enemies must be eternally grateful for white liberal guilt.
