Did You Hear About Healthcare at Mass?
National Catholic Register ^ | 3-15-10 | Matt Archbold

The USCCB came out strongly against the current healthcare bill which is now being considered by the House of Representatives. You wouldn’t know this from the mainstream media coverage which has been too busy reporting (celebrating?) that the Catholic Health Association endorsed the healthcare plan.

The bishops did, however, put out a bulletin insert on March 11th asking Catholics to contact their elected representatives and urge them to protect life. The banner of the insert reads: “Stop Abortion Funding in Health Care Reform! Protect Conscience. Ensure Affordable Health Coverage. Allow Immigrants to Purchase Private Health Insurance.”

The text reads:

“As long-time advocates of health care reform, the U.S. Catholic bishops continue to make the moral case that genuine health care reform must protect the life, dignity, consciences and health of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. Health care reform should provide access to affordable and quality health care for all, and not advance a pro-abortion agenda in our country. Genuine health care reform is being blocked by those who insist on reversing widely supported policies against federal funding of abortion and plans which include abortion, not by those working simply to preserve these longstanding protections.”

I pray that every Catholic that hears those words or reads them takes action and stands against the current healthcare legislation that is being crammed through Congress right now.

But here’s the thing. I went to Mass on Sunday but I did not receive the insert nor did the priest speak about the issue at all.

I’m wondering how many of you received the insert in your bulletin or did your parish discuss healthcare, abortion, or conscience protections in any way?

The Church should have had this statement written weeks ago - they had ample opportunity to prepare for any contingency. Moreover, they knew that Pelosi had to sell the Senate bill and that abortion restrictions, if any, would subsequently be stripped in the Senate.

The lack of foresight and organization by the Catholic Church is inexcusable. Their actions are shameful - for an organization that claims to be the stewards of the most innocent life.

I am a life-long Catholic and I am furious.

Nah, Just talked about slaughtering the fattened cow this past Sunday. Although, my priest has expressed his opposition in past sermons.

March 11 was a Thursday, I bet most bulletins are put together before that. I do think if a parish priest really wanted it in, then that could be overcome though. This same thing happened a while ago, on the same subject, the timing does seem screwy from the USCCB(yech).

I didn’t hear anything about it at Mass (Richmond diocese), maybe next weekend it will be in the bulletin.

Disapointing, I am not surprised.

"I am a life-long Catholic and I am furious."

Then why didn't you do something about it weeks ago? It is always easier to blame "they" than to accept personal culpability, isn't it. The next question you need to ask your self is what are you going to do about it today? Have you approached your parish council or priest to see how you can actively participate or do you feel that anonymously sniping via the internet is good enough?

The bishop of Arlington asked his flock to set aside March 15 as a day of prayer and fasting:

Catholic teaching tells us that our support for the dignity of life includes access to affordable health care. This support, however, cannot come at the expense of the respect for life at all stages, from natural conception to natural death.

As negotiations that are now underway could lead to further Congressional action very soon, in accord with Canon 1244, paragraph 2, I invite you to take part in a day of prayer and fasting on Monday, March 15 for protecting the life, dignity, health and conscience rights of every human person in any legislation that Congress considers. I also invite Catholics to pray and fast for this intention beyond March 15.

In moments of concern and crisis, Catholic tradition through the centuries has unfailingly urged the faithful to turn to the spiritual aids of prayer and fasting in order to draw closer to our Lord and His will. Through these deliberate actions, we communicate a desire to avoid sin and unify ourselves with that which is right and good. I firmly believe that, working together while open to God’s wisdom, the citizens of our nation can respect the dignity of each human person both in law and in practice.

Code Red” - House Target List on Health Care

The National Republican Congressional Committee has published a target list on health care. In addition to continuing to contact the five Tennessee Democrat Congressmen, you can go http://www.votervoice.net/link/clickthrough/ext/94697.aspx to contact some of these targets. Much of the talk following Obama’s announcement has focused on how to defeat this second bill through reconciliation, but that is misleading because the first step to defeating Obamacare is not by concentrating on defeating the “fixer” bill but by defeating the Senate bill in the House when it goes to the floor for an up-or-down vote on Thursday, March 18th.

Congressional Dems on Twitter

And here are toll-free numbers we can use to call any Senators or Reps.
At the first number below you must wait through a tape recording urging you to tell your Rep or Senator to vote “yes” for the health care bill. Just hang on and when the recording is over, you will get the Capitol operator. Just ask for your Rep or Senator’s office. Then you will either talk to an aid or have the chance to leave a message for him/her to vote NO on the health care bill.

When you use the second number and the Capitol operator comes on, just ask for your Rep or Senator’s office. Every time I use this number I get the Rep or Senator’s answer machine, so it may be set up that way all the time...to go to their answer machine. Either way you can leave a message to vote NO on the health care bill!

We need to use these toll free numbers that have been set up for the health care/ BO supporters and illegals to use! After all they are FREE!
