It's the Culture, Stupid
The American Thinker ^ | March 14, 2010 | Jack Cashill

Posted on 03/14/2010 3:14:37 AM PDT by Scanian

Had the culture celebrated marriage and the government rewarded it, there would have been no subprime crisis, and all other tax-eating pathologies would have been contained. Allow me to explain.

In my new book, Popes and Bankers: A Cultural History of Credit and Debit from Aristotle to AIG, I have attempted to reverse-engineer our train wreck of an economy and see where exactly it went off the tracks. In the book, I begin my search at Deuteronomy, but a more proximate milestone on the path to understanding might be January 20, 1993, the day on which Bill Clinton was inaugurated.

Inspired by James Carville's famed maxim, "It's the economy, stupid," number-cruncher extraordinaire Bill Clinton crunched his opponent with economic metrics right into the White House. Unfortunately, Clinton had been crunching the wrong numbers all along.

I hope Mr. Cashill has a personal bodyguard. He tells the truth about the mortgage mess.

As Koeppel tells it, in 2004, Smith contracted to buy a $470,000 home in Boston's Dorchester section with no down payment.

Her combined monthly payment ran roughly $3,500 a month to begin and more as the loan adjusted.

I am supposed to feel sorry for this person?

Marriage no longer works out for men anymore thanks to feminist domestic violence and alimony laws. Men are smart not to get married in this day and age, especially since the failure rate for first marriages is 2 in 5. There’s literally a 40% chance that your marriage won’t work and you’ll lose 50 or even 90% of what you earn, even if you earned it before marriage. Then there’s the chance that your wife may lie about you beating her and you’ll lose all of your belongings automatically in the divorce case.

Destroy the VAWA and alimony laws we have currently on the books and you’ll see an uptick in marriage.

A very excellent article. Thanks for posting it.

I disagree with only one point. The author speaks somewhat mockingly of how the charge of racism was used to silence critics of Clinton's Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac boondoggles. The implication is that there really is no racism in the United States today.

On this point I profoundly disagree. There is extreme racism in the country. But it is the racism of the white liberals who shamelessly exploit vulnerable black citizens to advance their progressive agenda. It is they, the white liberals, who have savaged the black family with catastrophic consequences for the entire nation. They have destroyed their faith, their ambition, their self esteem and confidence and replaced it with hatred and resentment that can never be assuaged.

This my friend is the seat of racism in America today. And it is every bit as destructive of the soul as the institution of slavery. In some ways worse. A slave knew he was not free and he knew who oppressed him. The slave of the modern welfare state is told he is free, but he knows he is not. Worse yet, he is told to trust only his government benefactor. And this is the very person who enslaves him.

Sure he is. No one holds a gun to his head and forces him to sign up for welfare benefits.

Compared to what he has had to say about Hussein’s books, today’s article isn’t that rough.

Glad you like the post.

The shoe of racism is definitely on the other foot today, no doubt about it.

Americans should refuse to apologize, feel guilt, or do penance for anything that they did not do personally.

"Americans should refuse to apologize, feel guilt, or do penance for anything that they did not do personally."

Now there is a refreshing bit of common sense.

Really enjoyed the article. Thanks for the post. The Thinker is a top notch outfit. This is one of those examples where the answer to the question is very plain to see. It’s just that it’s been ignored for reasons of political correctness.

^^^
And many men have no need to get married, as there are plenty of young women willing to shack up with them.

I lagree with how he blames Andrew Cuomo for perpetrating this nonsense on the American people when he was HUD secretary. I blame a lot of this on both Clinton and HUD. Isn’t Cuomo planning on running for Gov of NY if he can find enough dirt on the present Gov. Patterson to make him unelectable???

For those who love Sandra Lee of the Food Network, please be aware that she is living with Andrew Cuomo and his children. I stoppped watching her when I found out about that.

What is kept hidden is the actual amount of bad money that was injected into the system by the subprimes. People have been arguing back and forth about the effect of the subprimes, but no one has been able to detail the share of blame the subprimes are due. My own view is that even if it was a lesser share, any further holes in a leaky boat just made the boat sink faster.

Re: Post #11

Well said. (Though I read the author’s point of view viz. racism differently.)

Yes, very well said!
