Which is it. . .I should go to the movies or think like a human; you can’t do both. Obviously, you take your movies pretty seriously, but if you start to notice some gray stuff oozing out your ears it might be from brain rot. Anyway, let me quote Howard Beale for you (its from a movie, so you might understand) “My God, we (TV-movies-entertainers) are the illusion. . you’re the reality.” It means don’t be such a putz about illusions effecting how you think about reality. That means there are no 7 dwarfs either. . Snow White? never happened.

Thanks DocRock. I intend to write an article on Charlie Smith. Your insight is not only helpful but it helps to tear down walls and promote colorblind solutions in our nation as my organization National Urban Policy Action Council (NUPAC) does to promote “Colorblind solutions to universal issues”.

I know Freepers do not like Oprah, but she has had the subjects of this heartwarming story on her show several times:

http://www.oprah.com/relationships/North-Carolina-Families-Adopt-Liberian-Orphans.

Several affluent families in the Charlotte, NC, area were motivated by Christian love to adopt members of Liberian boy's choir that performed at their church. Some of the couples were “empty nesters” ready to enjoy some time alone. Others had children even younger than the teenage boys. Others adopted more than one choir member and even brought their siblings who were back in Liberia to live in America. It is a wonderful TRUE story of Christian love and “colorblindness”.

Several years ago, I began to notice increasing numbers of multi-racial and black infants, toddlers, and small children being pushed around WalMart and the mall by white adults. It is now absolutely commonplace. Whether the adults are foster parents or relatives, a LOT of non-white kids are now being cared for by white adults.

“If the theme is about “Christian love,” I think the more compelling story and example is what just about any white person would experience if they showed up in virtually any African-American church anywhere in the country.”

You’re kidding, right? Maybe anywhere in the country but DC. Been there, done that. Bigger bigots on earth cannot be found.

...as Christopher Chambers wrote for Race Wire – the color lines blog, “This is all about them rescuing us from ourselves.”

Everything wrong with black America today in one sentence. Behind it is the implication that a culture of violence, murder and the most horrible social pathologies is somehow "authentic" and must somehow be preserved. It's the sociological equivalent of Christian Science.

I think the charge of bigotry should be focused on a particular person or persons and the citing of specific behavior. To level the charge, as you do, with such a broad brush means you are choosing to vent rather than to contribute a constructive thought. That’s free speech, of course. . .but its not discourse. . .just saying.

If you search. On "Charlie Smith Liberia" you will get a lot of hits. Be sure and locate the story about when the Social Security lady finally found him picking fruit at the age of 113. She told him he "didn't have to work any more". He started throwing grapefruit at her and while she shielded herself with her breifcase, he yelled, "Living don't scare me, dying don't scare me, it's what's in between that scares the 'kink'out of me".

I teach 4th grade boys Sunday School and most of the kids are bussed in from low income housing areas and are minorities or poor. When racism rears it's ugly head, I explain all racism is taught. When I was a child and my grandfather pointed Charlie Smith out to me, he said, "See that colored man in the cowboy hat, that's the oldest man in the world and he loves to tell stories, go talk to him". So I walked up, tugged on his pajamas sleeve and asked, "Mister, what color are you?" He laughed and we became friends. I was about 7 and he was just an old man and as a child, I was "color blind". I believe most children are the same until their purity is poisoned by fear and hatred from their peers.

Keep me posted on your efforts as I would love to share your article with my Sundays school class. I put a lot of effort into teaching them our Christiann heritage of this nation as it is negleglected in the public schools. But that's another story.

“...White families were happily adopting black children until liberals (white and black) decided that black children should not be raised “white” but “black” as their parents are.”

And yet liberals want homosexuals to adopt heterosexual children. Go figure!

Good points all. That last point, may be the real motivator for lots of folks - not running afoul of the gravy train...what a SHAME...and if she’d turned down that role, she’d still be another two bit actress...now she’s got an academy award...

Presumably the thinking (rather an oxymoron liberal/thinking) is that the “alternative lifestyle experience” would be preferable even to the “black experience.”

Excuse me, but it was YOU who painted with the broad brush.

Unless, of course, “any white person would experience if they showed up in virtually any African-American church anywhere in the country” isn’t your idea of a broad brush. You didn’t even restrict your description to “typical white person.”

As a matter of fact, I lived in DC for seven years. During that time, I visited at least three different churches that could be designed “black” since the congregations were virtually 100% African American. The minister(s) and a few parishioners went out of their way to be courteous to the white visitor; however, the tenor of the rest of the congregation seemed resentful, not loving or welcoming, to the intrusion into THEIR church. It gets a little better at funerals, where it’s assumed it’s a one-time visit.

“”you can’t do both.””

You may be generalizing your personal circumstances to the wider world around you.

I have friends who took in a very famous Football player in the late 70’s/80’s and let him live there. He later went to the Superbowl 4 times. Yep the family is white and he is well, I guess, black.

His wife is funny as hell and he just just a plain nice guy.

I have yet to see the movie, but I did read the book. It wasn’t sappy as it appears to be from the posts here. I don’t recall Leigh Anne holding Michael’s mother’s hands while the mother cried. In fact, I don’t remember Michael’s mother being of much help to Michael at all and Leigh Anne being fairly disgusted with the mother. I suspect there are quite a few more embellishments. It will be interesting to see.

You visited three churches in SEVEN years and yet you can level the charge “Bigger bigots on earth cannot be found.” Dude, I think you forgot to check your “tude” at the door. Heck, I’m white AND I CAN FEEL IT!! Give it up. . visiting African-American churches is not your forte, trust me. Better stay in the white neighborhood.
