I would say that you are talking about “atmosphere.” I also tend to like movies with a distinctive visual style. Some that come to mind are ‘Dark City,’ ‘The Matrix’ and ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ Occasionally, the style is so overdone that it risks distracting from the movie itself (’Sin City’, ‘300.’) I really, really, really hated the color (or lack thereof) in ‘Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince,’ especially when contrasted with the color of the early Potter films.
I think this is definitely part of the director’s vision, along with help from the cinematographer and editor. I like listening to DVD commentaries because you get an idea of what they were going for in making certain choices.
