BMW's were fairly rare in 1979 / 1980 and not as well received as today. I can't think of seeing too many at all during that time period. It seems too contrived to see "The One" arrive in a BMW (now if the article said a diesel Rabbit I wouldn't blink an eye), but BMW reads "class warfare, elitist alert" now, in 1980 not so much.

I knew lots of fellow grad students & one of my punk neighbors driving Bimmers in the 1980’s.
