I think Steorn is looking beyond the grid. CEO Sean McCarthy has stated, “The availability of free energy will change everything, the availability of free energy in the form of Orbo is even more significant since it can be engineered directly into devices, i.e. no grid connections are required. So Orbo will impact every aspect of our lives”

Since it doesn't work, they're selling hype.
It’s a scam on so many levels I’m not sure where to begin:
1: The rotor is so loosely coupled to the toroidal field electromagnets that on the scale that the Oscilloscope is on you wouldn’t see much of anything. (that’s why it takes so long to come up to speed) Even with that there is no “load” on the rotor. They even went to the trouble of including a machinist micrometer to minimize the rotor shaft end play. If there was a real load on this really low friction rotor the waveforms would look MUCH different.
2: The Oscilloscope is set to trigger on the rising edge of the optical encoder..which is the equivalent of a set of brushes. So of course the beginning of the waveforms is not going to move across the screen..No surprise there.
3: The “ringing” at the end of the pulse is due to the reactance of the coils...not the optical encoder. It’s a classical situation that is well understood. It’s the self induced voltage due the collapsing magnetic field. Note that it swings in dampened form in both directions. That’s a reactance..NOT a resistive element such as a photo transistor. In older automotive ignition sytems the capacitor/condenser helped to counteract this voltage swing from the ignition coil which if left unchecked caused the points to burn up much quicker...same thing.
4: Lastly If this thing actually works why don’t they connect the spinning shaft to a small generator and take the output of the generator and feed it back to this “thing” showing that it will continue to spin forever all on it’s own Hmmm ???

Actually their business model is to liscense it to others and let anyone develop it, you can sign up for the ability to do so on their site easily. I hope it’s real, we are going to need all the extra energy to warm up the planet with this new ice-age coming on!
I will accept your pemise for the sake of discussion. And I will imagine how I would handle the situation if I found I had discovered a source of unlimited, free and clean energy. Let's see, hummm... what would I do? Oh, I know. I would produce electrity and sell it back to either the power company or to big commercial users. Or I would produce steam or hot water and sell that.
So why is Steorn wasting his time trying to convince people he has found free energy? Why not just produce it and sell it? Why not just keep quiet and let the bucks roll in?

Either it works and they can proof it (build a working model for examination) or they can articulate the principle, or it doesn’t and it’s a scam.
My money is on the latter.
And far more likely than “free energy”. The anti carbon crowd would come running with fistfuls of money.
Yes, it doesn’t look like they will be making products to sell. They are a small R&D company with around 20 employees.
Their business plan appears to be this.
1. Use the current demo to prove their technology works beyond all reasonable doubt (without giving away all their trade secrets)
2. Have engineers and developers who are pursuaded sign up for access to their exclusive knowledge base for a fee where they can learn the secrets of their technology (under NDA of course)
3. Make money from royalties on products sold that employ orbo technology.
So they haven't developed it yet?
Sounds might odd. If it really worked, I'd develop the s**t out of it and sell a finished product.
If it was a scam, I'd go the multi-level marketing route and sell licenses.
Well there have been plenty of scams in this field for sure. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof, and if Steorn have what they claim they’ll have to provide it before anyone takes them seriously.

Steorn's advertisement in The Economist was intended to attract the attention of scientists to form a "jury" to perform independent tests of their technology and to publish the results.[21][22] 420 scientists contacted Steorn within 36 hours of the advertisement being published[23] and on 1 December 2006 Steorn announced that it had selected a jury.[5] The jury was headed by Ian MacDonald, emeritus professor of electrical engineering at the University of Alberta, and the process began in February 2007.[6]
In June 2009 the jury announced its unanimous verdict that "Steorn's attempts to demonstrate the claim have not shown the production of energy".[6][7] Dick Ahlstrom, writing in the Irish Times, concluded from this that Steorn's technology did not work.[6] Steorn disputed the jury's findings[6] and said that, due to difficulties in implementing the technology, the jury had only been provided with test data on magnetic effects for study.[24] Steorn also said that these difficulties had now been resolved and that a commercial launch was still planned towards the end of 2009.[6][24]
It’s really quite simple, just attach an electric motor to a generator and the electricity produced by the generator will run the motor which will turn the generator which will....so on and so on.
Over unity, decoupling money from investors, while spinning the hype shaft on the muddle model and gainng monemtum till total sense overload.

Well to be fair, Steorn hasn’t accepted any money from the public for the 3+ years since they went public with their claim.
The forum for fee paying licensees (”SKDB”) opens on Feb 1. If they don’t show anything compelling during the remainder of January then there won’t be much interest. The burden of proof is on Steorn.
