I am going to a Beach House at The Outer Banks that says it has wireless internet access. I have a wireless card which I use at home with Verizon along with my P4 tower. I am a wireless dunce. Any help would be appreciated!

Nothing to do with getting online, my friend, but you need more memory. XP is a memory hog (Vista’s worse.), so go to www.kahlon.com and add more RAM to that little old beastie. I recommend, if your system will handle it, a minimum of 1GB for XP.

Once you’re at your destination, just let Windows display available wireless networks and choose one. It’s not hard; I do it all the time. If you want more specific instructions, send me a FReepmail.

There is wireless internet almost everywhere that is developed. Go to a local Starbucks, or a similar place with layabouts with laptops and see if you can log on.

You will need to have wireless capability in your laptop, most have it built in. Even so, you may need to turn the wireless receiver/transmitter on, probably by using the “FN” + F2 key. Read your owner’s manual.

If you have Vista, try “Connect to>>” and you should see a list of available wireless networks. Select an unsecured one and click “Connect”.

If you don’t see a list, your wireless may be turned off, or you may not have wireless capability.

Good luck.

That notebook has wireless networking built in. If your notebook has at least Service Pack 2 installed then windows will find the wireless network. A bubble pops up from the system tray “wireless networks detected”. Right click the bubble and choose “view available wireless networks”. You can then choose the network and click connect.

Don’t forget that most wireless broadband services have a 30-day trial period before your contract becomes irrevocable. How long is your vacation again?

When I go on vacation, I go on vacation, no laptops, no internet and preferably no phone service and if I do have cell service I screen all calls, if it ain’t family or friends screw it.

GregB, visualops got it exactly correct. THIS is your answer:

If your notebook has at least Service Pack 2 installed then windows will find the wireless network. A bubble pops up from the system tray “wireless networks detected”. Right click the bubble and choose “view available wireless networks”. You can then choose the network and click connect.

Ignore everything else on this thread.

Nevermind some people can’t be helpful when it’s obvious what you meant even if garbled.

You will want to get your windows updates for security reasons, and also things like the latest browser versions require SP2.

You really do need more memory.

Take it to a Best Buy or other computer store. Buy the memory there and they should install it for free. Have them test the connectivity of the wireless and show you how it works.

*** I have a Dell Latitude C610 P3 1000mgz with 256 memory ***

I see you said you bought his for $50, know you're short on RAM and you're going to upgrade it. Well ... here's the bad news ..

Welcome to the world of Dell Hell.

Dell is INFMOUS for making and selling their 'stuff' with the MINIMUM amount of RAM fora functioning computer. And knowing you will HAVE to upgrade and most will go back to Dell, use the MOST EXPENSIVE components they can find. Especially RAM.

I bought a custom built to order Dell pc back in 2000 and from day one it wouldn't run properly, slow as molasses. The Dell Tech guy immediately blamed Windows ME and then said, "Well, you don't have enough memory". I 'screamed', "Then why did you sell it this way! There should have been a warning symbol popup". (if I could have jumped through the phone I would have choked him). Bottom line by the time my 4 yr warranty was over I replaced EVERYTHING inside it except the Motherboard, plus 4 monitors and three Keyboards. My Service file was about two inches thick and they hated it when I called. They even replaced stuff (another monitor and video card) after my warranty expired, IF agreeing that I'd never call them again :-)

And yes I did have to double my RAM to 512mb. I got it when Dell had a sale. It was 'only' $250.00 (I hate DELL)

Thanks for all the help people. I bought a wireless card from Ebay for $12 and put it in. I figured I can get memory also. I will be getting a better one. It works for what I need it for.

You're welcome and good luck with your used Dell.

btw, after I posted, I happened to see the RAM Memory dimm's you need for much cheaper, about half the 1st price I posted from another online store. So you can get to 1024mb (1gb+) for about $75.00

Also, I buy all my computer stuff from TigerDirect.com. (I should have checked THEM on those dimm prices, duh)

The computer I'm on now is a Systemax, which is part of the Tiger Direct Corp. I got it almost 3yrs ago. Its USA made and serviced(1). Only problem I've had was the Power Supply Unit fried - it was my fault, I never cleaned the inside and knew it was running hot. Got a new one, no questions, no charge, and in two days.

(1) No Indian call center where you get 'Tom' and 'Harry' who can barely speak English.

Ignore everything else on this thread.

I still think he should go to a Starbucks or other fine establishment with an unsecured network and do some trial runs. He may be able to iron some bugs now rather than on his busy vacation schedule.
