Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars series. If you read the first chapter of the first book in the series, A Princess of Mars, you'll read them all. :)

I seem to vaguely remember that premise ...you're right, it's probably not The Adept Series. I thought for a minute that it might be The Mathematics of Magic by L. Sprague DeCamp, but that doesn't seem to be right either.

Oh, well --- the memory is always the second thing to go.

Spellsinger by Alan Dean Foster? Did it have “critters” in it?

Not Spellsinger.

I remember these things:

His first “spell” was part of “A Visit from Saint Nicholas” where he teleports a bunch of bad guys up to a distant wall by quoting the poem.

There is a magician who is helping him who cringes everytime he makes up a spell by creating poetry, because of the intrinsic dangers of just making stuff up.

He gets a magic sword and, through poetry, gives it a mono-filament edge.

Saga of The Seven Suns by Kevin J. Anderson-A 7 novel series that involves a large scale interstellar war between several alien species. An epic space opera.

The Posleen War series by John Ringo-Vicious aliens invade Earth and we fight back, great battles with nuclear artillery in this one. (oh yeah!)

For recent books, I recommend John Scalzi - “Old Man’s War”, “Ghost Brigades”, “The Last Colony”. The basis for the books: when people get to age 80, they can join the military and get new young almost invincible soldier bodies. Lots of fun exploring the implications.

Never read that one. Ever. Not even close. I want to know what it is and who wrote it when someone finally IDs it...
