Once you've gotten the $7.50, two of the three wrong answers can easily be eliminated: 50 dimes is $5 and 90 pennies is $0.90. Dividing the 30 quarters by 2 and then by 2 again would quickly confirm that one as the correct answer.

I do agree with earlier posts, though, that pressure was probably a huge factor in her difficulties.

The first time I ran through it in my head I got fooled by the ‘Seventy nickels’ answer because I still had $1.50 rattling around in me brain.

there are 6 quarters in $1.50 hence 6x5= 30 quarters

Once you get to that point it’s a piece of cake to determine the number of dimes (75), then the answer is obvious.
