Here's what the MSM will not tell you about Eunice Kennedy Shriver -- unlike almost everyone else in her politically powerful family, Mrs. Shriver remained true to the pro-life views of her Catholic faith. She recognized that political clout was not reason to abandon one's principal's in defending the most helpless among us.
Here is an excerpt from a story on Mrs. Shriver from Feminists for Life's Remarkable Pro-life Women, published in 1998.
WHEN EUNICE KENNEDY SHRIVER was awarded the Presidential Medal of Honor in 1984, then- President Ronald Reagan declared, "With enormous conviction and unrelenting effort, Eunice Kennedy Shriver has labored on behalf of Americas least powerful, those with mental retardation
. Her decency and goodness have touched the lives of many."
Shriver, a longtime supporter of Feminists for Life of America, has demonstrated a lifelong concern for the "least powerful." The founder of Special Olympics International and executive vice president of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, Shriver supports organizations that work on behalf of women and children, born and unborn...
As executive vice president of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, Shriver continues to support solution-oriented programs to eradicate discrimination and problems faced by the disenfranchised. The Kennedy Foundation says its mission "is to provide leadership in the field of mental retardation and services to persons with mental retardation, both those born and unborn, and their families."
Shriver, recognizing the high rate of mental retardation among children born to teen-age mothers, led the foundations efforts to develop an innovative program to address the causes of problems facing teen-age women and their children. Called Community of Caring, the program focuses on "health and nutrition for the pregnant teen, preparation for childbirth, development of parental skills, and the importance of continuing in school and avoiding risk-taking behavior." Parents and community volunteers act as a mentoring network for teen-age mothers. Since its inception in 1986, more than 350 schools have adopted the Community of Caring program.
In my opinion, the tireless efforts of Mrs. Shriver easily make her the most significant, successful, and saintly of the Kennedy Clan.
Didn’t know she was pro-life (not a surprise the MSM kept that quiet). Thanks.
Yes, Rose.
God bless her. I didn’t know she was pro-life either. I’ll bet that didn’t go over well with brother Ted.
She may have sometimes called herself prolife and had some involvement with prolife groups but she also often campaigned for pro-death Democrats. Limit the praise.
According to Wiki, Ethyl & Bobby, Jr.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethel_Kennedy
“Due to her strict Catholicism, Ethel reportedly objected when her children’s private school began to teach the Theory of Evolution[6].
Like Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Sargent Shriver and her son Robert F. Kennedy Jr. she is also strongly pro-life.”
Thanks, WTW — I *knew* there was *somebody* else.
But are we sure about Rose? Was she PINO? I seem to remember a bit of a dispute about that... could be wrong. Could have been another member of the clan...
People who are close to others who are special needs tend to be pro-life because guess who would be the first candidates for abortion.
Being the “most saintly” Kennedy? Talk about “Special Olympics.”
I heard years ago that Eunice gave Ted a hard time—in private.
I’ll go out on a limb and say that she should have been MORE outspoken than she was.
Rosemary? Kathleen? We’ll never know.
She probably cared as much as we do what Fat Ted the Drunk thinks.
...but she also often campaigned for pro-death Democrats.
$$$
Good point!
I would not call that “nit-picking”. Important distinction in what you caught.
Eunice actually offered Feminists for Life some advice — that they should pick one thing and focus on it.
For Mrs Shriver it was the Special Olympics.
(For FFL, it became their College Outreach program. Check it out at www.feministsforlife.org )
