I don't know why he'd say this. Gates only says what 2/3 of the population here in Durham is thinking every day. After all, Duke is an institution that's employed both the Gang of 88 and a gay pedophile rapist; they'd LOVE to have somebody like Gates on staff.

I've lived a lot of places and Durham is the most racist town I've ever lived in. But here, all the racism goes the other direction.

I have seen reverse discrimination against whites again and again in academic appointments. The salaries offered to black stars like Gates and West are astronomical compared to what those of us white boys teaching in regular universities get (maybe $65,000 after 30 years of teaching).

I am the same age as he is. I spent 10 years in short-term positions before I even got an entry level tenure-track job, at age 39—in large part because blacks and women of questionable competence were eagerly hired and white men openly (I have sat in faculty meetings where open discrimination was announced) discriminated against.

The next time you rail against tenure, remember that up to 20 years of earning power can be lost before one even gets a start toward tenure. And for a career-track that tops out at $65,000 or 70,000 for many at the middle-of-the-road schools. (Business schools, law schools, medical schools and research science and engineering salaries are a whole different ball park.)
