PHOENIX (AP) Maricopa County authorities say four boys ages 9 to 14 have been charged in the sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl whom they had lured to an empty storage shed with chewing gum.
The county attorney’s office says 14-year-old Steven Tuopeh is being charged as an adult with two counts of sexual assault and kidnapping while the other boys are being charged as juveniles.
Authorities the 9-year-old is charged with one count of sexual assault, a 10-year-old is charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of kidnapping, and a 13-year-old is charged with three counts of sexual assault and one count of kidnapping.
Phoenix police Sgt. Andy Hill says the boys held the girl down while they took turns sexually assaulting her.
The boys are being held in a juvenile corrections facility while the girl is in the care of Child Protective Services.
All the children are refugees from the West African nation of Liberia.
