Whilst here in California, the use of a turn signal is an indication to the driver in that lane to close up the gap and eliminate any possibility of making the turn. Moral: don’t use the turn signal in California.

Ugh! My biggest peeve while navigation Central Expressway every day. What do they think we are, friggin' mind readers?! Just show a little courtesy by using a signal and I'll return the courtesy by giving you enough room to change lanes.

Most of the damn country doesn't know what a turn signal is. Here in SW Pennsylvania, driver's are generally quite nice; they'll often wave you in from a side street or stop the traffic behind them and let you make a left turn when the traffic behind you is likewise thick. But there is one habit which absolutely drives me up the wall-- many of them can't merge to save their lives. There may be 200+ yards of better of merge lane remaining and they come to a sudden dead stop to let the traffic clear before they go immediately over to the traffic lane. Of course, nobody in the traffic lane is going to move over to let these type of nimrods in for fear they'll do something equally stupid in front of them.

While I appreciate the courtesy and manners on the two-way streets around here, I cannot stand the abject stupidity on the controlled access highways. It is almost like the courtesy and the brains turn off once the posted speed is above 40 m.p.h.
