Saxby Chambliss returned to the Senate after winning a hotly contested election in which many Georgia conservatives, disgusted with his votes for the bailouts and stimulus and his stance against domestic drilling, voted for the Libertarian candidate, Allen Buckley. The number of votes acquired by Buckley did not allow Chambliss to gain a majority and forced a runoff with his Democrat challenger.
Chambliss eventually won the runoff, helped a great deal by support from talk radio and national Republican leaders who were all apparently willing to sacrifice their conservative principles to save the Senate from a filibuster-proof Democratic majority. And we see now how well that has worked.
Many of you have undoubtedly contacted your senators on this issue already. I encourage you to continue doing so, especially if you received an impotent, politically-safe response like this, received from Chambliss on July 7:

Climate change is an important issue that deserves serious and thorough debate. The current legislative proposals to address climate change would have a dramatic effect on our economy and the way we all live.
The Senate is considering climate change legislation that would affect our nation for many years to come. Any system that is created to address this issue must be understandable to taxpayers, including consumers and small businesses. Citizens need to be aware of the effects of any proposal and how it will impact them...

Apparently not... but I think it’s because he’s probably not running for another term. He’s not too concerned with voter wishes now.
Isakson, his idiot "Little Brother" is up for re-election next year and he is trolling for money, which he won't get from me.
The basic problem is that the GOP at the state level does not respond to the wishes of the electorate. They are mired in the old "smoke-filled, backroom" politics. Therefore we don't get good candidates.
I can understand why Saxby isn’t listening—he managed to squeak it out in ‘08, and he’s safe. Isakson, though, sent me an almost identical response, and, as you say, he’s up for re-election.
What makes me sick is that the talk shows (i.e., Hannity, etc.) continually pushed Georgians to vote for Chambliss because he would be the deciding filibuster vote. These same people now whine about the party losing its values and conservative principles.
What needs to happen if the Republican party is to emerge from the “smoke-filled room” is that some of their good ol’ boys need to lose in states where the population is known to be overwhelmingly conservative, like Georgia. Chambliss needed to lose to send a message to Isakson. Now ol’ Johnny will run on the old message that he has no intention of following once he gets back to Washington.
The problem with letting the no good Republicans lose in conservative states, is that then you're stuck with someone like Wyche Fowler for six long years.
I suppose that the alternative could be worse, but how much worse could it really be? A Democrat would have voted for the stimulus. A Democrat would have voted for omnibus. A Democrat would vote for cap-and-tax. A Democrat would vote for health care. I don’t know that Chambliss will vote against any of those issues. If the nation’s going down either way, at least let it be the fault of the Democrats...
I'm not sure who the dims will run against Isakson, but Roy Barnes could be trying to position himself for that, or another run at Governor. Many years ago, before he was governor, I was on a jury where Barnes was one of the attorneys. While listening to him, I thought to myself "if there's a stupider human being on earth, I don't want to meet him".
LOL... oh let’s not get into who’s going to replace the limp-wristed Perdue... :D
After thinking about it, I think Barnes has a better chance at governor than he does at Senate, even though the Senate IS becoming a collection of buffoons.
