His mother was too young to pass on her US citizenship according to the law in effect when he was born.

Careful, that law only applies to children born *outside the US* of one US parent and one foreign national parent. That may or may not be the case here. There are other arguments to be made if he was born in the US, but that law only applies if he was not.

Thanks .. just posted the whole opinion.
Most are hung up solely on the certificate,
but we know it’s far more complex than that.
