Which of course coincides with Obama sending an additional 21,000 troops to Afghanistan.
The military often cannot be fully forthright in a public forum. There are things you don't want the enemy to know. A public forum is, almost by definition, a public relations effort. You don't want to tick off your allies, run afoul of the press, or give ammunition to domestic political enemies by a few ill chosen words.
I believe members of the military are barred from criticizing the Commander in Chief. Most generals would not do so anyway, as they respect the chain of command. All that said, I strongly suspect that President Bush and the military were truly on the same page. I say this despite believing that Bush erred in leaving Iraqi reconstruction to the State Department, when he would have done much better leaving it to the Defense Department.
I'm sure the military is just waiting to see how much of a disaster President Obama will turn out to be. They may have story after story that they can't reveal. Or, President Obama and his people may currently be on their best behavior, relying on the military and, in general, trying hard not to screw up the war. But self restraint, national defense, and respect for the military are all contrary to the liberal nature. If Pelosi, Reid, Obama and their people haven't screwed up the war yet, they surely will.
