Art Monk - Champion Athlete and Man of God
The Daily Change ^ | 04022009 | TDC

Mr. Monk said this during his Hall of Fame speech.

“One thing I want to make very clear, is that my identity and my security is found in the Lord”

“What defines me is the word of God.”

Art Monk was a beautifully gifted athlete, it was a true pleasure and honor for me as a young boy to have watched him play the game of pro football.

I'll always remember Art Monk as an Eagle.

I understand him. I always think of Willie Randolph as a Dodger.

Blasphemy, sir! There’s only one set of colors to remember the great Art Monk in, and that’s white, burgundy and gold!

(We have to remember the legendary #81 in those colors...we haven’t had that much to cheer about since!)

Art Monk was one of those players that I could never figure out how he was as good as he was. He never looked like he was running that fast or pushing that hard. He wasn’t blindingly fast like Ricky Sanders or a kamikaze across the middle like Gary Clark. He was just always, somehow, open and hauling in catch after catch. I still don’t think I’ve ever seen a WR that made greatness look so totally effortless.

It's okay, Emmit Smith will always be a Cardinal to me also.

In all seriousness, even as an Eagles fan, there was something saddening about seeing him in colors other than the Burgundy and Gold.

I can still remember Ray Rhodes saying he was a "cold weather receiver". Yuck. That was such a disrespectful characterization of one of the Greats of the Game.
