Poll: Castle leads Biden

The conventional wisdom has held that Delaware’s Attorney General Beau Biden would be a shoo-in to win his father’s old Senate seat, given his pedigree and political experience at the statewide level.

But a new poll from Public Policy Polling shows that Republican congressman Mike Castle would defeat Biden in a head-to-head matchup by eight points, 44 to 36 percent.

Both candidates’ approval ratings are strong: 49 percent of voters approve of Biden’s performance, with only 27 percent expressing disapproval. Castle has a 54 percent approval rating, with just 33 percent disapproving of his work.

Castle, a leading Republican moderate, has comfortably won re-election since first winning the House seat in 1992. He served as the state’s governor from 1984-1992.

But outside of Castle, Republicans don't have much of a bench in the state -- and would be hard-pressed to pick up the seat without him on the ballot.

Castle is a liberal, period. He also turns 71 in 2010, well too old to start off in the Senate. I doubt he’d give up his House seniority. We need younger Conservatives in the DE GOP. The party there is stagnant as hell and lost their last bastion of power in November, the DE House.

Special election in ‘10. A seat-warmer named Ted Kaufman is the current holder. He’s not running next year.

Right. Kaufman was supposed to be the “seat-warmer” for Beau.

"Castle, a leading Republican moderate,"

RINO ALERT, RINO ALERT, RINO ALERT...

Let's get a "real conservative" in their to ensure victory for Mr. Biden. How dare the GOP think about competing in an overwhelming blue state.

Has the media commenced their attacks on Castle yet?

So you'd rather have Biden in there? This is DELAWARE that we are talking about.

It's one thing to oppose RINOs in places that are winnable. (I'd throw Pennsylvania and Ohio in that group.) However, it is another thing entirely to oppose RINOs where there is no other viable candidate in a deep blue state.

Castle gets us closer to 51. We need 51 if you want the Republic to live.

“So you’d rather have Biden in there? “

I’m fairly certain I didn’t say that.

“a deep blue state.”

Delaware is deep commie RED.

Ok. Delaware we agree, Delaware is full of commie pinkos. Castle would be far better than anyone that the rats would put forward. As much as I wish it were different, we aren’t getting a Jesse Helms there.

Castle’s 2007 ACU rating was a jaw-dropping 20. That’s HALF of Specter’s and nearly Lincoln Chafee territory. That’s liberal by Democrat standards. My liberal Democrat Congressman scored almost the same as Castle. He’s too old and too leftist.

I know the Dems think they have a lock on this seat since Beau is an Iraqi vet. Let’s hope not.

You’re right about Castle, but right now, he’s probably the only person in Delaware who can add an “R” to the ranks of Senate Republicans. The younger conservatives will have to run for the local and state legislative offices, as there are none who can at this time.

Perhaps state Auditor Tom Wagner could win, but I don’t know if he has any interest in running, and I also don’t know his stance on the issues.
