Peter vs. Paul: Is America About to Split?

Things have truly come full circle – from a Virginia patriot's eloquent plea to his countrymen to fight for their right of self-determination, to a Miami crowd demanding a Marxist con-artist shakedown their fellow citizens. We have turned from a nation of rugged individualists to one where half the population demands to live as parasites.

We once were proud to provide for ourselves because we knew that, in order to be free, we had to accept that responsibility. Now, a slim majority is proud to shirk their responsibilities and expects others to provide for them, so much so that they think government exists to effectively stick a gun in someone else's back and steal their money.

The old saying goes: “When you rob Peter to pay Paul, you can count on two things: Peter's anger and Paul's undying support.” I think it forgot a third thing, which is the inevitable logical conclusion of the process – Peter and Paul beating each other senseless. As Paul demands more and more of Peter, eventually Peter reaches the “enough is enough” breaking point and refuses to participate further. At the same time, Paul has been receiving Peter's money for so long that he has come to believe that it's his entitlement, and so feels “robbed” when Peter stops paying. The next thing you know, fists are flying, if not bullets.

America is already split. Just look at the numbers from both Bush elections and see how many voted for Algore and Kerry, two individuals who have absolutely no qualifications too be president of the most powerful country n the world. On that note, both of them are MORE qualified than the runt that is running now. But, expect him to get more votes, legal and illegal, than either Kerry or Algore did. McCain is going to lose the popular vote, but we can only hope he wins the electoral vote. Obama is already going to win the majority votes in the large urban areas. But, say he beats McCain by 10 million votes in California, it does not matter how many votes he beats McCain by in Cal. He will still only get those 55 or so electoral votes. He can beat McCain by 25 million votes in Cal, he’d still only get those 55 votes. Same with NY and NJ. He can win 80-20% on popular vote, but still only get the max of their electorals. So, that is why I expect Obama to win the popular.

The author is right.
Except that no society can maintain for long this type of system that robs from Peter to pay Paul. All through history, wherever it has been tried it eventually broke down. Of course, it took 80 odd years for the USSR to implode.
Today I believe what we are witnessing is the implosion of the mix economy here in the West. Obama isnt the future...win or lose...he is like the last commissars....all our presidents since Hoover have been to one degree or another socialistic.....in my whole life I have never heard a reporter ask a candidate for president if he was a follower of Karl Marx.....the death of socialism,mixed economy,command economy, whatever you want to call it is at hand...........but it will die ugly and slowly....be prepared.....maybe McCain is the Command economy's Gorbachev ?

I don’t think the blue area would be quite so big. If a split occurred, expect N. Cal. & E. Washington to go red, likewise, most of Illinois (except Chicago), 95% of Michigan, and western NY & PA. Not only would you have states secceding, but you’d have states splitting (Virginia / West Virginia being the example from Civil War I).

I don’t know. I just wish if we have to have a 2 party system we could choose the partys laws we want to be governed by. I would go for that. let the Dems be Dems and us be us. THAT would be real freedom.

Yeah, the system is brittle now, very very brittle. Would only take one sharp kick to bring the whole rotten edifice down. We will be tested, my FRiend, we will be tested.

This is sort of a repercussion of the cold war. The Soviets house came down. We didn’t think ours would too, but more and more I think it must. I hope people still use computers in the new republic.

Well, awful as it sounds, it does spread the wealth from those who earned it to those who didn't. Too bad it never works for long. Once the unearned wealth has been spent - and there's no one left to steal from - the country goes broke.

Well, until the UN (defenders of dictators world-wide) gets into the picture - and then we'll "help" the starving poor...
