80% of Congress Has No Background in Economics

As Congress works on one of the most important pieces of economic legislation in a generation, a Washington research group has pointed out that more than 8 in 10 members of Congress don’t have a formal educational background in the business, economics, or finance fields.

The research by the Center for Economic and Entrepreneurial Literacy, which aims to educate the general public about finance issues, showed that about 14% have degrees in economics-related fields and just 6.7% specifically have an economics degree. More than 30% of members have degrees in politics and government, while 18% majored in humanities.

“It’s interesting that those who are responsible for solving the biggest economic crisis in generations don’t have the educational background to know the difference between commercial paper and copy machine paper,” said James Bowers, managing director of CEEL.

Apparently a lot know how to read polls.
80% of Americans don’t approve of this socialist bill.

BTW, Mccains vote for this bill will seal his fate.
The big mo he gained by picking Palin, will be more than offset by his support of this socialist bill.

If this bill is so great why did 95 democrats vote against it.

That didn’t stop Louis Freeh and Jamie Gorelick going from National Security to running Fannie Mae.

Ted Kennedy’s voted the wrong way in the past (at least once he was instructed to “correct” a vote he made against abortion). He’s got an excuse being a brain damaged drunkard.

A liberal who understands how markets work is as rare as a liberal who understands the Constitution and as rare as a liberal with common sense in foreign relations etc.,etc, etc.

They might not know much about the logic of actions and their consequences, but they sure can stir up emotions, anger and delusions.

Most liberals would take a giant step forward if they would turn of Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow and MTV and instead read and digest a couple of books on market theory and formal logic.

Aren’t the vast majority of our politicians lawyers? You know, members of the profession whose sole purpose is to manipulate laws and regulations for the benefit of whomever pays them? Why should we be surprised that they create disaster after disaster for the rest of the country?

If this bill is so great why did 95 democrats vote against it.

Because it didn't contain enough socialism - bailout for homeowners by letting a judge determine the payment vs the bank / credit union.

I'm just answering the question, not defending the bill.

No Kidding. Captain Obvious strikes again.

I would support legislation that requires senators and congressmen to have passed certain minimal educational requirements.

Courses on Economics and on the American Constitution for a start. But certainly not all.

I had no idea of the percentage of Congressmen who had a background in accounting and economics, but the first thing I said to myself when this thing broke is, “Do any of these people have a clue about economics?” “Could any of these elected officials look at a spread sheet and know what they are looking at?” Last, but not least, “have any of them ever heard the term “audit” which is part of any due diligence before large sums of money change hands?”

I dunno’, folks, but I’d sure like somebody to have a look at the “books” before we are all on the hook for this mess, but I guess I’m just an anachronistic afterthought.
