Beverly Perdue's Stink

There have been a couple of stories that have swirled about over the last month or so regarding gubernatorial candidate Beverly Perdue. These stories have been reported at Under the Dome, at Jeff Sykes' blog and over at Red Clay-- but there certainly has not been concomitant, prominent, drumbeat coverage in most of the mainstream media that I have seen. The Raleigh News and Observer, however, had this story about the first situation I will describe.

In any case, the matters to which I refer are as follows:

1. Perdue's interest in a certain Florida development company was not recorded on her financial disclosure statements as required. Perdue claimed it was a clerical error. Her general counsel from the Lieutenant Governor's office was sent to the offices of the State Ethics Commission to correct the error. But he was allowed to view the records alone unsupervised, in a closed office.

A staffer at the Ethics Commission documented the situation, and got fired after the Raleigh News and Observer inquired about that documentation. Another staffer-- an assistant Director-- removed her documentation from the visitor's log. The staffer who was fired, Amanda Thaxton, also had been cooperating with an Office of State Personnel review of the commission.

The state Auditor, Les Merritt, wanted to investigate the situation, but the Ethics Commission sued in state Superior Court to prevent him from doing so.

This is a serious situation. A state employee was used by Ms. Perdue in a matter related to her personal financial disclosure filings. That employee was permitted to view her records in complete privacy, unsupervised. An employee who documented it was fired. The state Auditor was sued to prevent an investigation. Red flags abound.

2. An ethanol company, Agri-Ethanol Products, made a deal with a former state official to obtain help with an environmental permitting process. $100,000 and a lucrative consulting contract worth another $100,000 were exchanged. That former state official-- Boyce Allen Hudson-- has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Two of the major investors in this company contributed to Perdue's gubernatorial campaign. After the above circumstances were made public, Perdue returned their contributions.

But it turns out that one of these investors in Agri-Ethanol Products, Ricky Wright, had hosted a fundraiser for Perdue two years ago.

Sounds like the typical workings of our state Democratic Party to me.

Does anyone else smell a stink? Ms. Perdue, it seems, has some explaining to do.

Fern Schubert in “The County Edge” has been talking about Bev Perdue’s dubious dealings, too.

Interesting. As is the latest Dole ad about Bev’s on-shore oil interests.

Nothing to see here, just business as usual in RAT NC politics.

If the brain dead NC voters still vote for Perdue after all of the scandal and crimes that have been exposed in the past 8 years under Sleazley's reign they are even stupider than I think they are. How many perps have been taken out and are still in the big house? I've lost count.

I feel like this is the last chance they have to redeem themselves, if they vote her in I give up on NC politics and will just bide my time until I can move out of this godforsaken state.

Thanks for posting this, I am e-mailing it to every NC resident that I know requesting that they send it to everyone they know. I've been pleasantly surprised at how hard McCain has hit BO in his ads and speeches. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that McCrory can get this out there because I think this will be her downfall.

The state Auditor, Les Merritt

I saw an interview with this guy on the news. He struck me as a pretty straight shooter.

Perfect name for an auditor, as well.

"As is the latest Dole ad about Bev’s on-shore oil interests."

I believe the target of the advertisement is Kay Hagen, Senator Dole's opponent.
