Have to read the fine print The Exclusions.
THE PX/BX’s have always charged a little more than the real world for some reason on electronics.
Commissary is always cheaper than the PX/BX for food.
Taking all of the comments as an unscientific survey, it is time to disband AAFES, at least in CONUS, and outsource the operation to WalMart.
This doesn't apply to certain things like hygiene items and other day to day items.
I would belive that in the mid-late 80's, but in the early 90's the exchange rate hit the bottom (DM1.49=$1.00)
There's another reason that I hate that SOB!
"Nothing but the best for our troops" was the watchword for the Clinton administration, wasn't it? /UltraMegaGigaDrippingSarc
Sister Marie Catherine was a great lady.
I hope she is in heaven.
This is an example. It’s how the world works. A GI will some times pay more than go to town. Then we have to consider the sales tax in town.
PX is OK for convenience. Other than that the prices aren’t any better. Commissary can be better. Heck, even in 1991 I was paying $6.00 a carton for Marlboros.
What Bluemoon initially said and what he ought to be pissed about is that this isn’t AAFES selling the printer for $100 more than HP, but AAFES is letting HP sell as a 3d-party vendor directly on the AAFES website. So HP is controlling the price on the AAFES website.
And they are STILL marking up the EX470 $100 more for the troops than they sell it on their own website - hp dot com.
argh. Bluemoose, not Bluemoon. Got me thinking about the Class VI :-)
AAFES buyers need to shop around for a better deal for their customers or at least get some idea of how NEX and MCEX buyers do it. We get good deals at our Navy or Marine Corps Exchanges. I do find items sold in AAFES to be a little higher than the local economy.
Something else I found about El Segundo, CA LAAFB: they are getting rid of car decals in favor of military or dependents IDs.
One other thing: could these outrageous prices in AAFES connected to the general lack of leadership, discipline, and concern for troop welfare and mission in the Air Force as evidenced by the recent firing or resignation of AF top brass? One wonders.
We used to joke that acronym AAFES stood for:
Another Agency F*****g Enlisted Soldiers
I seem to rember a rate in the DM1.60 or 1.70 to $1.00 range. Oh well, long time ago.
