Most American history books -- but not Back to Basics for the Republican Party -- are written by liberal professors, who downplay or ignore Democrat villainy. As a result, few people today know the political element of the New York Draft Riot. Here's the story from the Republican point of view:
On this day in 1863, Democrats began a four-day killing spree in New York City -- continued at http://grandoldpartisan.typepad.com/blog/2008/07/the-new-york-draft-riot-was-democrats-attacking-republicans.html
My all-time favorite jaw dropper is the Wilmington, North Carolina riot of 1898. A group of Democrats, led by a Confederate veteran, actually threw the Republican mayor out of his office and took over the government. It was a genuine coup. Many blacks, fearing for their lives, left Wilmington for good.
The “Gangs of New York” does a good job of depicting these riots.
Mainly it was poor Irish who were being forced to fight a war against the South that they did not necessarily support.
If you had $300, you could pay someone to serve for you, and avoid serving in the Union Army.
But talking to demonrats today...we’re not the same party...and I say #$@%^ that, you would do the same thing today, if we’d only give you the chance.
