Boy Scouts' secret "degenerate" files revealed

The Washington state supreme court has forced the Boy Scouts of America to turn over "ineligible volunteer" files that revealed a sexual abuse problem among Scout leaders far greater than the organization previously admitted. Although justices ruled that the files themselves would not be made public, attorneys said the Boy Scouts "have ejected at least 5,100 adult leaders nationwide for sexual abuse allegations since 1946," according to the Seattle Times.

In the past 15 years, the organization has kicked out leaders for abuse allegations at a rate of one every other day.

The ruling stemmed from a 2003 suit filed by two former Scouts, brothers Tom and Matt Stewart, now men in their 40s, who say they were sexually molested by a Scoutmaster over many years.

The records they obtained show that, as part of the "ineligible volunteer" files, the organization retained information on 1,000 "degenerates." The Stewarts' attorneys counted 732 "degenerate" files from 1946 to 1971 among the 45 boxes of files ordered disclosed by the Scouts.

Lumped together as "degenerates" were both volunteers known to be gay and/or known to be pedophiles.

Jon Davidson, legal director of Lambda Legal, told Gay.com that the Boy Scouts of America understood that those two groups had little, if anything, to do with each other.

So let me get this straight, the boy scouts are vilified for not allowing gay men to be scout masters because they know that gay men are pretty much the only group that molest young boys. So they are forced by the courts to allow gay men in. Now they get vilified because the gay men caught molesting boys were kicked out, oh and they kept files on them. Someone please tell me what the Boy Scouts are supposed to do? The obvious goal is the destruction of the Boy Scouts. Can not allow any organization that teaches morals now can we?

Actually, the BSA was not forced to allow gay men (or lesbian women) to join Scouting. Also, gay men are not pretty much the only group that molests young boys. There are a number of examples of married men with kids who seem to have a secret life. Finally, the BSA has made it very clear that they do not view homosexuals as automatically pedophiles; they exclude homosexuals because the prevailing opinion of the organizations that sponsor Scouting units is that homosexuals are not morally fit to be examples for young people. The goals of those who are bringing as much pressure as possible on the BSA to include "avowed homosexuals" as members are varied. Some are simply homosexuals with kids who would like to be their kids' leaders. I have sympathy for them. Some wish to normalize homosexuality in American culture. After all, what's more American than the Boy Scouts? They don't see what they are doing as destroying the BSA, but updating it. Some wish to destroy anything that opposes inclusion of homosexuals. Both of the latter two groups see the BSA's policies as leading to the degradation of the self-image of homosexual kids, in turn contributing to their higher rates of suicide, etc.
