Thank You President Bush

Even as I write this I know that people smarter than I will have written their own concise and analytical commentaries as to what went wrong for Republicans during the mid-term elections of 2006 and for me, that’s OK. My intent is not to analyze what went wrong for us but to express my own appreciation to a man often belittled, often maligned, and often unjustly so. That man is my President, George W. Bush, and right now I sincerely believe that the President needs some kind words. He has received damned little in the course of his Presidency. Instead, throughout his Presidency and certainly in the last week he has suffered the most vicious attacks, consistently from the Left but lately even from certain of us on the Right, and it’s time to provide an honest appraisal.

Many of my fellow conservatives rending their robes and gnashing their teeth right now, angrily insisting that the President never meant to lead a conservative revolution and that somehow he betrayed the cause, need to take the midterm results with some historical perspective. President Bush came to office in the aftermath of a bitterly contested election that was ultimately settled by Supreme Court decision. A slim Senate majority greeted his inauguration, which was promptly erased with the exit of Jim Jeffords from the Republican Party and which was not restored until the midterm elections of 2002.

I think the words are nice, but President Bush would be overwhelmed simply with the knowledge that we are praying for him.

But President Reagan was elected in two landslides that gave him a definite mandate, and was blessed with a personality that, even while continually facing a biased media long before the Limbaughs and the Hannitys came along, overcame his liberal Democrat opposition and helped him achieve most of his agenda. It is extremely important to understand that President Bush did not have this advantage.

I too thank President Bush!

Thank you for two Conservative Supreme Court judges. I only wish the people "teaching" the Republicans a "lesson" would realize that they screwed themselves for a 3rd Conservative Supreme Court judge.

Thank you for reducing the income tax rate for everybody. In my new tax bracket I have 8% less taken from my paycheck and can afford more for my family.

Thank you for the strong leadership in facing the Hussein Regime and the Taliban/al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.

Thank you for sticking to your guns on the NSA program and the prosecution of captured terrorists.

And thank you for leading this country to a booming U.S. economy.

Bush does deserve respect and thanks, but we also have to recognize that he has largely failed as a conservative leader -- and is increasingly failing as a defender of our security and civilization. It's perfectly true that he didn't campaign as a serious conservative, but nonetheless, that's what we needed, and we don't have it.
It's equally true that he was dealt a lousy hand by the 2000 Senate losses, the Jeffords betrayal, the media, Hurricane Katrina, most of the Euros (not to mention the Russians and Chinese), the MeCains, Grahams, et al in the Senate, and many other things. But it's also true that Bush played his hand poorly in many cases.

It's time to move on. This is a broken presidency that will produce very little good in its remaining two painful years. We need to find more serious conservative leaders and heal the badly injured conservative movement, as well as the sickly Republican party.

Thanks so much for posting this! I continue to believe that one day history will marvel at how ungrateful the American public was for this fine man, who has done his very best for our nation.

I will never regret supporting him through both elections, and I pray that when he leaves office he can enjoy his family and his ranch without the ever-present harassment of the media.

What would be painful is having Hillary for President. I just don't think Bush is as bad as people portray him, I mean he's not perfect, no one is. I'm more afraid of what the Republicans have in mind for the next election. McCain? Guilliani? No thanks.

Just to be fair, I would word it as follows:

Uninformed and New York Times reading Voters gave the Congress and Senate back to the Democrats, due to elected and appointed Republican officials who abandoned many conservative causes. The President is partly to blame for allowing Congress to spend our money in pork barrel projects. In particular with regard to the Senate, I think Elizabeth Dole as committee leader failed terribly.

It seems to me that you fall into the trap of blaming Bush for almost everything. I blame the RINOs like McCain, Chafee, ect. they are the ones who have rejected conservative causes. Actually McCain wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the McCain Feingold act, that put him over the edge.
