Santorum is a social conservative, and pro-defense, but his record on economic issues is certainly not a free market position. His strategy was to appeal to the Reagan Democrats, especially in Western Pennsylvania, union members who are socially conservative but economically liberal. However, the Democrats ran a candidate who appealed successfully to the Reagan Democrats. Combined with the erosion of GOP support in the Philadelphia suburbs, a phenomenon that has occurred through the suburban areas of the entire Northeastern megalopolis, from southern New Hampshire to northern Virginia, the Santorum re-election bid was sabotaged. The leftward drift of Northeastern suburbia sank Steele and Ehrlich in Maryland and Kean in New Jersey, and may have cost Allen his Senate seat from Virginia.

Santorum a RINO? Santorum supported the incumbent senator specter over challenger Toomey. Therefore Santorum is a RINO.
