Is it terrible that I spend most of the time reading this whole Foley/Hastert disaster with my eyes firmly planted at the top of their sockets in mid-roll? Is it wrong that when I hear Representative DoubleChin of Some-Town-I'll-Never-Visit, MN* has had an affair, my first thought is "Dear Lord, who in their right mind would marry this guy in the first place, let alone have sex with him?"
I've learned in life that someone's moral failings in one area do not necessarily translate into universal moral failings. I have a terrible temper, but I would never take drugs, steal, or cheat. People who steal but would never murder. People who murder but are faithful to their wives. People who cheat on their wives but won't cheat on their taxes. Thus, you select people for jobs based on the areas of their morals where they succeed. A man with a weakness for drink but a fondness for honesty would make an excellent accountant but a terrible bartender.
If the Mayor decides that he should follow through on the come-hither looks that cute blond on the fourth floor is giving him, I really don't care. Seriously. (In fact, I would argue that planting the image in my mind of him and her doing something other than chatting may be grounds for suing the local news media.) I didn't elect him for his libido or lack thereof; I elected him to run my city. I sure as h*ll won't care that he was faithful to his wife when I discover he's been taking the city's taxes and spending them on his racecar collection.
People who have moral failings, but commit no crimes, should be free from this ridiculous obsession we have with their private parts. The minute the moral failings cross into criminal acts, i.e. trying to molest a teenage boy, that is when we drop the d*mn hammer. Do you think if Foley had been anyone but Representative Foley, he would have been left free? Of course not. If he were Mr. Car Salesman Foley, he'd be in jail. (Thanks to Chris Rock for the inspiration.) It's not illegal to be an alcoholic until you drink while doing something you shouldn't be drinking during. It's not illegal to have a bad temper until you break something in anger. And it's not illegal to diddle the girl next door unless she's under 18 and/or unwilling. Sorry folks.
I am guessing I'm alone in this, but I feel like it had to be said.
*No offense to the fine people of Minnesota.
Can't say I don't sympathize, most people would probably agree with most of that.
People who prey on children should be exposed...and then castrated. Aside from that, stop wasting my time.
I am really thinking of not voting next month nor in 08.

I make this prediction: By the end of the week, we will hear news that Foley went beyond internet sex with boys. He had real sex with them.
This is why morality maters.

Foley is a problem but he isn't my problem.
All I want from the gov't is for them to stay out of my wallet, my property, and my business. ...out of my face, essentially. Tall order, apparently.
The Dem's are undermining their own base who supports gay marriage...which will result in gay adoption, the pedophiles dream! They are reinforcing the publics view that gay = pedophile.
The base know what they are doing. They are tripping Pubbies on their high standards.
There could be more stuff we don't know, but some blogger found the guy the 2003 IMs were sent to, and it turns out he's 21 years old now, which means he was 18 when the IMs were sent.
He also graduated the page program in 2002, so he was NOT a page at the time the IMs were sent.
I think it's disgusting anyway, but now we are talking about a consensual IM conversation between two adult males, with NO position of authority being in play.
The problem with a story like this is you never know what is coming next, and the initial impression makes it nearly impossible to get the truth out later on.
I care to the extent that I would really like to know how he managed to get away with it for such a length of time, and whether there are more like him out there.
