China #1 in Producing Ph. Ds

China, number one again; it has turned out more Ph.Ds last year than any other country in the world.

But a Ph. D. does not a good teacher make. Quality of teaching is being seriously questioned in China.

Professors are caught up in

1. The publish or perish mentality

2. Raising funds

and

3. Attending conferences, making them absent from class.

Gee, it sounds like the same problem there is with traditional colleges in America, no?

As a result, China has had some problems with plagiarism in the recent past.

In the near future, the Chinese universities are likely to have some problems with their students and competition from for-profits who make it into the country, too.

What do you think?

Interesting; China is the number-one country in the world for producing Ph. Ds, but its academic system is afflicted by many of the same problems which plague traditional American universities. Perhaps the problem is a fundamental flaw with 1) the non-profit system of colleges and universities and 2) the dual role of teachers and researchers which many professors find themselves forced into. Perhaps a wise for-profit university administration will decide to allow its professors to specialize at being *either* teachers *or* researchers, thereby avoiding conflicts of interest between these two occupations. I agree 100% with having university folks either be researchers OR teachers. Don't know who the LAME BRAIN was that came up with the idea to combine the two. That just creates double-mindedness. Probably why there is so much discontent in universities. All the minds are so overloaded they try to find alternative government forms to accomodate the problems...
